Happy Chinese New Year!

Posted by in Holidays, Looks Delicious!

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Happy Chinese New Year! Guest post by Jaden Hair of Steamy Kitchen.

This Sunday is not only Valentine’s Day. It’s also Chinese New Year—the Year of the Tiger! Since the Chinese calendar is based on the solar and lunar patterns, every year the holiday falls on a different day. Luckily, the color red is popular for both Valentine’s Day and Chinese New Year.

It’s good luck to eat specific foods on Chinese New Year (we are very superstitious people), and different dishes have different meanings. I’m not the type of person to take chances on ruining my good fortune, so whether I absolutely believe the superstitions or not, I’m going for it. Plus, if I didn’t, my Mom would be on my case for sure. She’s in California and I’m in Florida, so our phone conversations the day before go like this every single year:

“Are you going to make some lettuce for prosperity?”
- Yes Mom.

“How about shrimp for happiness?”
- Yes Mom.

“Make sure you don’t sweep the floor on Chinese New Year! You’ll sweep out all the good fortune!”
- Okay Mom.

“And take the children for a haircut today, not tomorrow or they’ll cut off their good luck!”
- I already did Mom.

“Did you buy some Chinese candy to bring in joy?”
- Yup.

“AYYAHH! But don’t let the children eat too much candy or they’ll get bad teeth!”
- (Sigh.)

My loving mother always makes sure that I’m following the rules our ancestors have followed for generations! And I gotta say, so far so good. We’re happy, healthy and always have more than enough.

If you’re looking for some fantastic recipes for Chinese New Year, how about these:

Lettuce Wraps by tfenger: These lettuce wraps symbolize growing wealth!

Or you can also make Chinese Takeout Garlic Shrimp by Joolsey. Shrimp in Chinese is pronounced “haa”—symbolizing laughter and happiness!

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Happy Chinese New Year! (Cheesecake Chinese Style, recipe submitted by TK member shecancook2)

Cheesecake Chinese Style by shecancook2: Here’s a twist on cheesecake. The great thing about this dessert is that they look like golden bars, which of course means wealth and prosperity!

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Happy Chinese New Year! (Asian Orange Chicken, recipe from Bobby of Blog Chef)

Asian Orange Chicken from Blog Chef: Eating oranges symbolizes wealth. This is a perfect recipe that I think I’ll be making for Chinese New Year!

Or try some Tangerine Beef by saucyblonde. This is a great dish for attracting wealth. Tangerines are always part of a Chinese New Year tablescape.*

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Happy Chinese New Year! (Asian Dumpling and Vegetable Soup, recipe submitted by TK member Lauren of The Beneshes)

Asian Dumpling Soup with Vegetables by Lauren: For prosperity, make sure you have some dumplings on the table! And you don’t even have to make the dumplings from scratch. Your local Asian market, Whole Foods and many supermarkets will have frozen dumplings.

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Happy Chinese New Year! (Asian Noodle Salad, recipe from Ree Drummond)

Ree’s Asian Noodle Salad: For long, long life. But remember, do not cut the noodle strands. Leave ‘em long. Otherwise you’d be “cutting your life short!”

*Oh. My. Did I really use the word “tablescape“? What’s next? Interchangeable curtains in my kitchen window to match my outfit every day?

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Pie Week

Tasty Kitchen is joining the Pie Week fun with some lovely pies of our own!

What is is about pie? There’s nothing prettier than pie. A pie says home. I wish I invented pie. (Now it’s my turn to say name that movie.)

Here are just a few of the many pie recipes you lovely folks have shared with us here. Did you know that there are about 28 pages of pie recipes in here? That’s a lot of pie.

First up is a Strawberry Rhubarb Pie with Streusel Topping from Melanie, who blogs at My Kitchen Cafe. Scrumptious!

Next to that is barefootbelle’s Buttermilk Sweet Potato Pie, which I can’t wait to try. See her blog post for more photos of this yummy pie.

Then we have a decadent Peanut Butter Pie from mcmom, who blogs at Let’s Dish Recipes. Trust me, it’s a winner.

Finally, A Cozy Kitchen gives us this rich, creamy Blueberry Cream Pie. You can see their blog post here. Oh my.

We’ll be sharing more pie recipes with you throughout the week, and I’ll be shopping for more stretchy pants by next week. In the meantime, join the fun and tell us: do you have any favorite pies? Share them on Tasty Kitchen; we’ll be featuring them all week!

Got Leftovers?

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Thanksgiving Leftovers

Did you survive the foodfest yesterday? Manage to escape the usual embarrassing questions? Get your much-anticipated annual replay of Uncle Lester’s "pull my finger" trick? Attempt to watch football over the buzz saw snoring of Cousin Earl, who managed to launch into a spirited commentary of the car insurance commercial before abruptly dozing off on the couch?

Has the waistband of your yoga pants asked to be put in the witness protection program?

However you spent your day, we hope it was a good one. And if you had the traditional banquet full of dishes that filled up ever available space on the dining table, chances are you’ve got more leftovers than available fridge space. But don’t worry! Just for you (well, a little bit for us, too), we’re featuring a few great recipes that can transform your leftovers into yet another special dish. In fact, they’re so good that you just might start cooking more so you can make these.

If you want to go light, we’ve got a few turkey salad dishes that won’t scare your yoga pants. Or maybe the chilly weather is calling for a hearty soup to warm you up. We’ve got that too.

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Thanksgiving Leftovers (Soup and Salad)Clockwise from top left: steamykitchen’s Curry Apple and Leftover Turkey Salad Sandwich (which you can pile onto lettuce cups so you can skip the bread), Turkey and Mushroom Soup from Kelly @ EvilShenanigans, and Turkey & Wild Rice Curry Salad from afarmgirlsdabbles.

A sandwich is another quick and light meal, and many of you love making sandwiches with all that good turkey. Here are some that caught our eye:

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Thanksgiving Leftovers (Sandwiches)Clockwise from top left: Turkey Cranberry Sandwich from Very Culinary, Thanksgiving Monte Cristo Sandwich from familyfreshcooking, and Turkey, Brie, Pear & Cherry Chipotle Panini from cookincanuck.

Another favorite way to use up leftovers is the classic pot pie. From the usual crust topping to puff pastry or a biscuit topping, there’s just something incredibly comforting about a warm and creamy savory filling topped with pastry.

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Thanksgiving Leftovers (Pot Pies)Clockwise from top left: Roasted Chicken Pot Pie from Natalie (Perrys’ Plate), “Enlighten” Autum Chicken Pot Pie from The Noshery, Hobo Bags from Cooking Ventures, and Chicken Puff Pot Pie from TootSweet.

Of course, turkey isn’t the only thing you might have in excess. Got leftover butternut squash? Turn them into pancakes. Extra sweet potatoes, carrots, and other veggies? Try a nice pureed soup with a hint of coconut and curry. Leftover stuffing? Make some amazing stuffing balls. Got leftover pie? Have it for breakfast.

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Thanksgiving Leftovers (Others)Clockwise from top left: Whole Wheat Butternut Squash Pancakes from EatLiveRun, Roasted Sweet Potato & Carrot Soup with Pumpkin Seeds from Eating for England, and Thanksgiving Stuffing Balls from patiodaddio.

And there you have it! A post-holiday roundup of recipes for your leftovers. I’m telling you, leftovers never looked better. Do you have a favorite way to re-purpose the remnants of your holiday feast? Come share them with us!

Happy eating! May your table always be full and may your yoga pants never leave you.

When the World Gives You Lemons…

It’s been quite a warm summer for many of us here in the U.S. and with the heat comes the constant craving for a cold and refreshing drink. Whether it’s from your neighbor’s kid’s stand or the concession guy in that huge theme park, it seems like nothing quenches that summer thirst quite like […]

A Pasta Salad Tour

A pasta salad is one of the easiest, quickest meals or sides to make in the summer. Much of it can be prepped in advance and it’s a great way to get your daily dose of vegetables. It’s highly customizable too. Don’t like one of the ingredients? Leave it out and add something else […]

A Sweet Story

Once upon a time, there was a child named … Zee. Zee was a middle child in a family of busy adults, three pesky siblings, two hamsters and a lazy dog that thinks it’s a fat cat, so they call him Whiskers. One hot summer day, Zee walked into the kitchen, sat on a […]
