Description

When my picky-eater son was little, this was one of the few foods he liked. Whenever I made any kind of fish, I told him it was fried catfish and he ate it right up.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound To 1-3/4 Pounds Catfish Fillets
  • 2 Tablespoons Prepared Mustard
  • ⅔ cups Yellow Cornmeal
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ teaspoons Pepper
  • ¼ teaspoons To 1/2 Teaspoon Ground Red Pepper (depending On How Hot You Like It)
  • Cooking Oil Or Shortening

Preparation

Spread catfish with a thin coating of mustard. Combine cornmeal, salt, pepper, and red pepper in a plastic bag. Add fish; shake to coat.

Heat about a 1/2 inch of oil or shortening to 375F in a large skillet. Fry fillets till fish is golden brown, about 3 – 4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels. Serve hot with your favorite tartar sauce.

We just finished this!! It was great! The mustard doesn’t really taste like mustard, it just adds a nice flavor. I didn’t have any cornmeal, so I used corn muffin mix and it was great. It added a little bit of sweetness to the coating. Thanks for the great recipe!!

Excellent! I made this with some cod fillets that I had. The mustard and cayenne added a nice little zip to the fish and the cornmeal made a nice coating. Thank you for submitting this one. It’s a keeper.

The mustard is the secret. My family loved this. It’s by far the simplest and tastiest catfish breading I have found. It rivals restaurant quality, for sure.

Last night I gave my first try at fried catfish and used this AWESOME recipe. I made under a pound of fish so I adjusted the recipe accordingly and it turned out very well. I used hot mustard instead of just regular and it was delicious. I think I’ll put more red pepper in it next time to give it a little more kick… or maybe add cayenne. Will be making again!
