Description

Replaces traditional macaroni noodles for gnocchi. It’s “OMG” good.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Store-bought (or Homemade) Gnocchi
  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 1 Tablespoon Flour
  • ¾ cups Milk
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon Mustard
  • ¼ cups Smoked Gouda, Grated
  • ¼ cups Cheddar Cheese, Grated
  • 2 strips Bacon, Cooked And Crumbled
  • ¼ cups Parmesan, Grated
  • 1 sprig Fresh Sage, Fried
  • Salt And Pepper

Preparation

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Prepare gnocchi according to package directions. Place in a single layer in a baking dish sprayed with nonstick spray.
2. Melt butter over medium heat in a saucepan. Whisk in flour until it thickens and bubbles, then whisk in milk and dijon. Stir until thickened, 3-5 minutes.
3. Add handfuls of the gouda and cheddar cheese to the milk mixture. Stir until all cheese melts and add salt, pepper, and crumbled bacon.
4. Pour cheese sauce over gnocchi and sprinkle with the parmesan. Bake 25 minutes until puffed and golden. Top with fried sage leaves (heat a skillet over medium high heat, add a dab of butter and sage, sauté until crisp).

I made this to the letter–with the exception of the sage, because my grocery store was out– and it was a real crowd pleaser. The instructions are quite easy to follow. I was pretty nervous about the roux/sauce, but it all went really smoothly and the cheeses blended well. The flavor is fantastic and it makes for a real rib-sticking meal. The only thing I struggled with was what to serve with it. I didn’t want another starch, but I wasn’t sure what veggies to serve or anything like that. Definitely will be making it again!

Note: I added some Tony Chachere’s creole seasoning for a little zest.
