Description

I love this sandwich. I really, really love this sandwich. The secret to this recipe is slow roasting the sausage and adding the roasted peppers.

Ingredients

  • 1 package Italian Sausages 6 Count Package Or About 1/2 Pound Size Package
  • 1 whole Bell Pepper Seeded Sliced Into Half Inch Strips
  • 1 whole Large Vidalia Onion, Sliced Into Half Inch Strips
  • 2 cloves Garlic, Smashed And Chopped
  • 1-½ cup Your Favorite Marinara Sauce
  • 1 jar 12oz Jar, Roasted Red Peppers, Drained And Sliced Into Half Inch Strips
  • 1 teaspoon Dried Basil
  • ½ teaspoons Garlic Powder
  • ½ teaspoons Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • 1 pinch Each, Salt And Pepper
  • ⅛ cups Grated Parmesan Reggiano Cheese Plus Extra For Garnish
  • 6 whole Hoagie Or Hero Rolls, Split In Half Lengthwise, Toasted If Desired

Preparation

Preheat oven to 325 F.

Heat a large oven proof skillet to medium high heat. Add sausage links and cook until browned on each side. Once all of the sides are browned, place sausages in an oven proof dish. Roast in oven for 30 minutes.

While sausage is roasting; sauté bell pepper, onion and garlic in the same skillet, for about 10 minutes over medium heat. Once they start to soften, add the cup of sauce, roasted peppers, basil, garlic powder, pepper flakes, salt and pepper, and cheese. Continue cooking for 5 more minutes stirring frequently.

Remove sausage from oven, slice each link into bite sized pieces and add it into the skillet with the peppers and onions. Return skillet to the oven for another 20 minutes until hot and bubbly and sauce is reduced.

Spoon into hero rolls and top with a sprinkle of cheese.
