Description

This sandwich is the epitome of a total comfort dish. All the deliciousness of a sloppy Joe turned Italian. Oh, and it’s smothered in 2 different cheeses from top to bottom.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1 cup Chopped Onion
  • 2 cloves Garlic, Minced
  • ½ cups Chopped Green Bell Pepper
  • 1 stalk Celery, Chopped
  • ½ teaspoons Dried Oregano
  • ½ teaspoons Dried Basil
  • 1 pound Ground Beef
  • 1 pound Ground Italian Sausage
  • 1 can (28 Oz. Size) Fire Roasted Tomatoes With Liquid
  • 2 Tablespoons Red Wine Vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon Brown Sugar
  • Salt And Pepper, to taste
  • 8 slices Aged Provolone Cheese
  • 8  Hoagie Or Sub Rolls
  • 8 slices Mozzarella Cheese

Preparation

Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add onion, garlic, green bell pepper, celery and oregano and basil. Saute for 5 minutes, or until onion is tender.

In the same skillet with the veggies over medium high heat, combine ground beef and sausage and sauté for 10 minutes, or until well browned. Add tomatoes, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and brown sugar and mix well. Continue to cook until liquid reduces by half. Season with salt and pepper to taste.

Place a slice of provolone on each roll top with meat then top with mozzarella. Place sandwiches in a 13×9 baking dish. Bake at 350ºF until bread is crusty and cheese is melted.
