Description

I loaded this Sloppy Joe filling up with extra vegetables to make these a healthy and satisfying meal—suitable for both toddlers and boyfriends alike. The Heinz Chili Sauce adds a nice kick as opposed to regular ketchup, as does the addition of Italian sausage (but feel free to use whatever you have on hand). Hands down the best Sloppy Joes I’ve ever eaten!

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons Canola Oil - Or As Needed
  • 1 whole Onion, Diced Fine
  • 1 stalk Celery, Diced Fine
  • 1 whole Carrot, Diced Fine
  • 1 whole Small Green Bell Pepper, Diced Fine
  • 1 whole Small Red Bell Pepper, Diced Fine
  • 1 pound Ground Beef
  • 1 pound Italian Sausage, Mild Or Hot
  • 1 can (8 Oz. Can) Tomato Sauce
  • ¾ cups Heinz Chili Sauce (or Ketchup)
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 1 Tablespoon Mustard, Yellow Or Dijon
  • 1 Tablespoon Cider Vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon Packed Brown Sugar
  • Salt And Pepper, to taste

Preparation

Warm a few tablespoons of canola oil in a large fry pan or braiser over medium heat. Add the vegetables and cook until tender, stirring occasionally, about 5 – 7 minutes. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the beef and sausage. Cook, stirring and breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon, until it is no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Stir in the tomato sauce, chili sauce, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper and bring to a gentle boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low/low and simmer, stirring frequently, for about 20 minutes to blend the flavors.

Serve with steamed hamburger buns, potato chips, and pickles. Don’t forget the napkins!

mmm Memories of my childhood. My Mom used to make Sloppy Joes for all the neighbor kids. I have my Mom’s recipe posted, but this recipe sounds delicious too. I will be making this recipe very soon. Yummy!!

These were delicious! I added 3-4 carrots, minced in the food processor. I also used a bunch of tomatoes from the garden that I ran through the cuisinart too. My family loved them! Especially scooped with Fritos or Sunchips.

This was delish–I omitted the green pepper but added 1 cup each finely chopped carrot and zucchini, and no one was the wiser (except the 7yo who saw me cooking). Thanks for a great recips

This was delicious! My kids really liked it too which is a huge bonus considering they are can be pretty picky eaters, especially my two year old. Will be making this again for sure!
