Description

My mom made this recipe often when I was young for BBQs. She always made it in the microwave but I have adapted it for the slow cooker. We enjoy it year round and it’s one of my husband’s favorites.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups Lentils
  • 10 cups Water
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 cup Water
  • ¾ cups Brown Sugar
  • ¾ cups Chopped Onion
  • ¾ cups Chili Sauce
  • ½ cups Molasses
  • 3 teaspoons Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Prepared Mustard
  • 8 slices Bacon, Cooked And Crumbled

Preparation

This recipe requires at least a 5 qt slow cooker.

Combine lentils, 10 C water and baking soda in slow cooker.

Cook on low for 4 hours: Drain and rinse lentils and add lentils back into slow cooker.

Add the remaining ingredients to the lentils, stir and cook an addition 4 hours on low.

My husband was very skeptical about lentils, but he really like this when I made it. I’m too lazy to cook bacon, so I left that out, but I used chicken stock instead of water in the first step. Thanks for broadening our horizons!

These are very tasty. I made a half batch, which cut the cooking time in half. You could probably even have put the flavoring stuff in after the first hour and been done within 2 1/2 – 3 hours, if you make a half batch. Flavor is REALLY yummy. Like barbecue sauce with a kick. Thanks for posting!
