Description

These taste very similar to the lamb gyros we get from our nearby cafe. I used ground beef (only because my hubby is more afraid of ground turkey than I am of snakes), but I am positive it would be wonderful with ground turkey!! The sauce is delightful!!!!

P.S. I know it looks like a lot of work, but I promise it’s not!!

Ingredients

  • FOR THE TZATZIKI SAUCE:
  • 1 cup Fat Free Greek Yogurt
  • 2 Tablespoons Reduced Fat Sour Cream
  • 3 Tablespoons Tahini Paste
  • 4 teaspoons Lemon Juice
  • ¼ teaspoons Honey
  • 1 clove Garlic, Minced
  • ⅓ whole Hothouse Cucumber, Peeled And Grated

  • FOR THE GYRO MEAT:
  • 1-½ teaspoon Oregano
  • ½ teaspoons Parsley
  • ¼ teaspoons Salt
  • ¼ teaspoons Black Pepper
  • ¼ teaspoons Onion Powder
  • ¼ teaspoons Garlic Powder
  • 1 pound Lean Ground Beef Or Ground Turkey

  • FOR THE ASSEMBLY:
  • 4 whole Flatbreads
  • ¼ cups Feta Cheese Crumbles, For Garnish
  • 1 whole Tomato, Sliced, For Garnish
  • 1 whole Onion, Sliced, For Garnish

Preparation

For the Tahini Tzatziki Sauce:
Mix first 7 ingredients (yogurt, sour cream, tahini paste, lemon juice, honey, minced garlic, grated cucumber) together in a bowl. Cover and chill until ready to serve.

For gyro meat:
Preheat oven to 375F.
Mix dry ingredients (oregano, parsley, salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder) together. Knead the spice mixture into ground beef (or turkey), like you are making a meatloaf.

On a foil lined baking sheet, make 2 loaves with the meat.
Bake for 35 minutes. Let rest for 5 minutes, then slice into strips.

Assemble the sandwiches:
Heat flatbreads in a nonstick skillet for 10 seconds each side. Spread sauce on flatbread. Place 2-4 strips of gyro meat in center of bread. Spoon a little more sauce on top. Garnish with feta, sliced tomato, and sliced onion.

This is a fairly mild recipe as far as seasoning goes, due to the fact I am feeding a 9 year old!! Please feel free to add more oregano or garlic if you like!!

oh, wow! i was just complaining to myself a few hours ago that i didn’t know how to make my favorite sandwich myself – and here is a recipe!!! thanks so much!!

I used Toufayan Mediterranean Style White flatbread. I also so the Tandoori Naan flats, I’m thinking that would be yummy. If you can’t find those, use Flatout flatbread or just plain ol’ pitas.?. Good luck finding them!

This sounds really good! What brand of flatbread do you use? I live in Idaho, and it’s not always easy to find good ethnic type breads.
