This really is the best burger. Made indoors in a skillet, topped with gooey cheese and onions . . . it’s a meal made in Heaven!
In a bowl combine beef, egg, grated onion, garlic powder, salt and pepper. Form into 6 thin patties.
Spread butter on one side of each slice of bread.
Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Cook the burgers about 3 minutes per side, or until cooked through. Set the patties aside. In the same skillet cook the thinly sliced onions until golden brown and tender. Set aside.
On a griddle, place six slices of bread (butter side down), top with a slice of cheese, a burger, some onions, another slice of cheese, and then another piece of bread (butter side up). Cook each side of each sandwich until the bread is golden brown. Serve.

If you use marble rye bread you have yourself a “Patty Melt” burger. Very good, one of my favs!
