Description

Creamy tomato-based sauce with yummy Italian sausage over penne pasta. My kids love to see this on the menu.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (about 16 Oz. Package) Turkey Italian Sausage
  • 2 cloves Garlic, Crushed
  • 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil
  • 1 can Crushed Tomatoes (28oz.)
  • ¼ cups Vodka
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Crushed Red Pepper Flakes
  • ¾ cups Fat-free Half-and-half
  • 1 cup Skim Milk

Preparation

Cook garlic in olive oil for about 2 minutes. Add sausage; cook until sausage is browned. Add tomatoes and vodka and simmer for about 3 minutes (this cooks off the alcohol). Season with salt and hot red pepper flakes. Add the half-and-half and milk and simmer for 2-3 minutes. Serve over penne pasta.

Freezing instructions: Cook as directed above. Allow to cool and store in freezer bags. Thaw in the refrigerator 24 hours before serving. Heat the sauce in the microwave, on the stovetop or in the crock pot (on high for 2 hours or low for 4 hours). Serve over penne pasta.

I was looking for something besides spaghetti and meatballs for my family. I have one child who refuses to eat pasta and another who has declared he no longer likes meatballs! Everyone in the family enjoyed the sausage and the sauce was so easy to make and not your typical marinara sauce. I will be making this again to add some variety to our lives..

This is sooooo yummy! It’s even better when your sister makes it for you! *waving at my sister, smalltowngirl*

In all honesty, I’ve had it at her house and made it several times at home. It is something everyone in the family will eat! YUM!

I don’t know if I got the wrong kind of tomatoes or what… but this did not turn out the way I thought it would! It was super soup-y and just not very flavorful, bummer. My husband and I have a lot of leftovers so we’ve decided we’ll keep it as a base, and next time throw on a jar of spaghetti sauce and some mushrooms!
