Description

This is how my grandmother always fixed kraut. Rinsing the kraut takes away a lot of the salt and the apples and brown sugar mellow out the flavors. Serve with boiled potatoes and rye bread.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Kielbasa, Sliced
  • 1 Tablespoon Oil
  • 1 whole Large Onion, Chopped
  • 1 whole Large Apple, Cored And Diced
  • 1 quart Sauerkraut, Rinsed And Drained
  • 1 cup Apple Juice
  • ½ cups Brown Sugar

Preparation

Brown kielbasa in oil in dutch oven over medium heat.

Add chopped onion and saute until onion is translucent.

Add apples and saute for a minute until they start to soften.

Add rinsed and drained sauerkraut, apple juice and brown sugar, stir to combine.

Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

I have made it this way, but cooked it about twice as long. Really delicious; everyone loves it.

This looks like a winner. My family always rinses the kraut and adds apple juice. Really makes it delicious and a little sweet.

This is the way my Grandma Speyerer fixed sauerkraut. I think rinsing the kraut and adding the apple juice is the secret. Thanks.
