The backyard burger just became even better with the addition of our secret weapon, the umami-laden fish sauce. It may sound weird, but once you’ve tried it, you’ll never make a burger again without fish sauce. Don’t worry, it won’t make your burgers “fishy” at all. It will merely add an extra savory element to heighten the taste of the burgers.
1. In bowl, combine all ingredients (except buns) together.
2. Allow to marinate for about 20 minutes.
3. Gently form meat into balls, then flatten into patties. Cook on a skillet or grill. (Half-pound patties on a medium/high grill take about 3 minutes per side for medium rare burgers. Temperature, thickness, etc. all affect cooking times.)
4. Slightly toast hamburger buns, and serve with condiments of your choice.

I’ll admit it: fish sauce scares me. But you’re not the first one I’ve heard say the crazy flavor disappears even as it heightens the taste of the dish, so I’m going to make a leap of faith and give this a go. s
