Description

These delicious sandwiches are actually vegan, but don’t tell anyone I said so! They taste as good–no, better!—than the real thing! Make it as spicy as you like.

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons Vegetable Oil
  • ½ whole Onion
  • 1 whole Serrano Pepper (optional)
  • 12 ounces, weight Veggie Protein Crumbles (I Use Smart Ground, Original)
  • 1 Tablespoon Salt
  • 1 Tablespoon Cumin
  • 1 Tablespoon Chili Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cayenne
  • 2 Tablespoons Red Wine Vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire (vegan)
  • 10 ounces, weight Tomato Sauce (plain)

Preparation

Place a large skillet over medium heat. Add vegetable oil, onions, and serrano pepper. Sauté for 5-7 minutes until soft. Add veggie protein crumbles, breaking apart the pieces with your fingers before dropping into the skillet. Stir.

After 3 minutes, add spices (salt, cumin, chili powder, and cayenne) and sauces (red wine vinegar, Worcestershire, and half of the tomato sauce). Continue stirring.

After the liquids are absorbed (5 minutes or so) add more tomato sauce until it is as “sloppy” as you like it.

Serve immediately on toasted buns. Enjoy!

This looks and sounds so good! I am going to try it with frozen/thawed tofu, crumbled up, which I find have a ground beef like texture, but is much cheaper than the crumbles. Thanks:)
