My spaghetti with sweet Italian turkey sausage is full of flavor, but low in calories and fat! It has healthy whole wheat noodles in a savory pasta sauce and sprinkled with a little Parmesan cheese and cracked pepper. It’s a big hit with our family every time.
Remove casing from turkey sausages and place the meat in a large frying pan over medium heat. Discard the casings. Break up the sausage with a spatula as it cooks. Brown and cook thoroughly over medium heat.
Into the frying pan with the cooked turkey sausage add the spaghetti sauce, water, diced tomatoes, sugar, salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, dried oregano, parsley and bay leaves.
Stir and bring to a simmer over medium heat. Then reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Cook the spaghetti noodles according to the package instructions then drain and set aside. Tip: Use tasty whole grain pasta to add more fiber and nutrition than regular spaghetti noodles.
To serve: Remove bay leaves from sauce. Put approximately one cup of whole wheat spaghetti noodles on a plate and top with approximately 1 cup of sauce. Sprinkle with Parmesan and fresh cracked pepper, if desired.
