My son’s godmother gave this recipe to me. It came from her mom. It’s simple and the flavors are just wonderful. I always make up a batch of meatballs to add to the sauce.
Cook garlic in olive oil in a large sauce pan over medium heat until it softens and starts to turn color.
Add the two cans of tomatoes, breaking them up. (I use a potato masher.) Add the tomato paste, combine and bring to a boil then lower the heat to a simmer.
Add the sugar, basil, and the baking soda (cuts the acidity of the tomatoes). Simmer for 1 to 2 hours uncovered, stirring occassionally. If the sauce is too thick just add a bit of water. Salt and pepper to taste.

My Mother in Law make it just like this! IT is great sauce, they call it gravy
