Comfort food at its finest: savory, rich bread pudding, with the familiar flavors of cheeseburger. Kids are sure to love it.
Brown the ground meat and drain. You can also use crumbled up leftover hamburgers, meatballs, or meatloaf.
Dice up the carmelized onions, or dice and saute some onion.
Beat the 6 to 8 eggs, and mix in the dairy. Milk is fine, whole milk is better, and half-and-half is divine. Evaporated milk also works fine.
Tear (or cut) the bread into smallish chunks. Think crouton-sized.
Mix all ingredients in a large bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Dry mustard powder is also delish. Leave it to soak in the fridge for at least an hour; overnight is better. The staleness of the bread will help it soak faster.
An hour or so before dinner, turn oven to 350 degrees and butter a 9 x 13 pan. Make sure the ingredients are still well blended, and spoon into the pan. Top with more shredded cheese, if you like. Bake for 45 minutes to an hour.
