Description

I found this recipe years ago in a Taste of Home magazine. Then I lost it, but recently found it again. My husband doesn’t eat anything with tomatoes, so this is a great alternative to Sloppy Joes. I’ve modified it over the years and instead of using pita pockets, I make it with flat bread and top them with lettuce, tomato, and sour cream.

Ingredients

  • FOR FILLING:
  • 1 pound Lean Ground Beef
  • ½ cups Onion, Chopped
  • ½ cups Green Pepper, Chopped
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 Tablespoons Soy Sauce
  • 2 teaspoons Garlic Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Ground Cumin
  • ½ teaspoons Italian Seasoning
  • For Dressing
  • ½ cups Soy Sauce
  • ¼ cups White Vinegar
  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire Sauce
  • ½ teaspoons Onion Powder
  • ½ teaspoons Italian Seasoning
  • 2 whole Tomatoes, Diced
  • 6 slices Pita Breads Halved (or Flat Bread)
  • 3 cups Lettuce, Shredded

Preparation

In a large skillet, cook the beef, onion and green pepper over medium heat until no longer pink; drain. Add the 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 2 teaspoons of garlic powder, cumin and 1/2 teaspoon of Italian seasoning; mix well. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer for 5-10 minutes.

In a small saucepan, bring the 1/2 cup of soy sauce, 1/4 cup of white vinegar, 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce, 1/2 teaspoon of onion powder and 1/2 teaspoon of Italian seasoning to a boil. Reduce heat; simmer for 5-10 minutes. Spoon meat mixture into pita halves; top with sauce, tomatoes, sour cream and lettuce.
