This is how my grandmother always fixed kraut. Rinsing the kraut takes away a lot of the salt and the apples and brown sugar mellow out the flavors. Serve with boiled potatoes and rye bread.
Brown kielbasa in oil in dutch oven over medium heat.
Add chopped onion and saute until onion is translucent.
Add apples and saute for a minute until they start to soften.
Add rinsed and drained sauerkraut, apple juice and brown sugar, stir to combine.
Reduce heat to low, cover and simmer for 20 minutes.

I have made it this way, but cooked it about twice as long. Really delicious; everyone loves it.

This looks like a winner. My family always rinses the kraut and adds apple juice. Really makes it delicious and a little sweet.

This is the way my Grandma Speyerer fixed sauerkraut. I think rinsing the kraut and adding the apple juice is the secret. Thanks.
