Having been born in the west, I had no idea what a black eyed pea was. We had a restaurant of the same name. It was wonderful, but served our regional favorites, no Southern dishes. So I listened and learned from all the native Southerners living around me and grew to love this particular dish. This is so easy and so tasty that if you are currently buying the canned variety (shame on you), you will never do so again!
Presoak the peas as directed on the package. Drain the water from the peas and place the peas in a crock pot. Add all the other ingredients with just enough water to cover the peas. Stir well to mix. Cover and cook on LOW setting for 8-10 hours.
I hope this becomes a favorite at your house. Serve it with grilled chicken or your favorite meat, or better yet, make it the whole meal with a side of greens and cornbread. Enjoy y’all!
