Description

Growing up, we always called this “Buttermilk Coffee Cake.” It wasn’t until I was older and asked my mom for the recipe that I discovered its true name. I make no claim as to the authenticity of the Italian moniker…

Ingredients

  • 2-½ cups All-purpose Flour
  • ¾ cups Granulated Sugar
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Nutmeg
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • ¾ cups Vegetable Oil
  • 1 cup Buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon Baking Soda
  • 1 whole Egg
  • 2 teaspoons Ground Cinnamon

Preparation

Sift together the first 5 ingredients (flour through salt). Add vegetable oil and mix well. Set aside 3/4 cup of this mixture (this will be your topping). To the remaining mixture add the buttermilk and baking soda. Beat well. Add egg and beat again. Pour into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan. To the topping mixture you set aside, add the cinnamon and mix well. Sprinkle this mixture over the top of the batter.

Bake at 350F for 30 minutes. Enjoy!

Maybe I shouldn’t bake in the morning because first I added the cinnamon with the rest of the dry ingredients and then I forgot to add the baking soda. Hah hah! I will say that even after all my blunders it was still excellent, just a little dense!

Very yummy! next time I might swirl the crumbs into the batter with a knife. They stayed dry and crumbly on the top.

This was so, so good!!! I used fresh ground hard white wheat and it worked perfectly. I don’t usually keep buttermilk on hand, but I always have milk kefir so I used that and it was perfection! Thank you for a great recipe!

I substituted melted butter for the oil and it turned out moist and delicious! This recipe is a keeper.
