My Mothers fancied-up hotdogs, split, stuffed, covered with stewed tomatoes.
Take the hot dogs, and slice them down the middle, keeping them intact on one side. Place in a casserole that will hold them flat. Cut the slices of American cheese, or you could be daring and use another type of cheese. Fit the cut slices into the opening you have made in the hot dogs. Pour the can of stewed tomatoes over the hot dogs , smushing them up a bit so every hot dog gets some tomato. Now place in the oven at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes, till all is heated through. You can run it under the broiler to brown the cheese up.
This was in the 1950’s and my dad was a laid off steamfitter. She also would bread slices of SPAM, pan fry them and tell us it was veal cutlet!
