Description

This is a recipe I grew up eating. My mother came over from Germany in 1966 and came up with this recipe based on the ingredients she had to work with here in the states. This is German comfort food and reminds me of my mom and the wonderful life she had.

Ingredients

  • 2  Beef Bullion Cubes
  • 1 pound Lean Ground Beef
  • 1  Egg, Beaten
  • 1  Medium Onion, Chopped
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • ½ teaspoons Black Pepper
  • ½ teaspoons Garlic Powder
  • ⅛ cups Bread Crumbs
  • 3 Tablespoons Cornstarch

Preparation

Fill a large pot with water and add beef bullion cubes. Heat to a boil. While water is heating, mix ground beef, egg, onion, seasonings and bread crumbs together in a bowl. Form into 6 balls. Place them into the boiling water and cook, uncovered, for 20 minutes or until cooked through.

Take meatballs out and reduce heat to a slow boil. Remove some of the cooking liquid and discard.

For the gravy, in a small bowl combine cornstarch with an equal amount of cold water to make a paste. Whisk this slowing into the remaining boiling broth to thicken it. Taste and add another bullion cube, salt or pepper to your taste. Add meatballs back to gravy and serve.

Growing up, we always served this over rice with a side of green beans. It’s also great served over mashed potatoes with a green salad on the side. Hope you enjoy this recipe as much as my family has!

So sorry it took me so long to see your comment. Have you had a chance to make them yet? You want the water to cover the meatballs so they can boil for the time limit. Hope this helps!

how much water do you use when cooking the meatballs?
