Description

Burgers made with Italian sausage are ultra flavorful, especially when topped with mozzarella, basil and tangy sweet balsamic reduction.

Ingredients

  • FOR THE BURGERS:
  • 1 pound Ground Beef
  • ½ pounds Italian Sausage
  • 1 teaspoon Kosher Salt
  • 2 Tablespoons Balsamic Vinegar
  • 5 slices Fresh Mozzarella Cheese
  • TO ASSEMBLE:
  • 10 slices Italian Or French Bread
  • ¼ cups Olive Oil
  • 5 slices (Thick Slices) Fresh Tomato
  • 1 bunch Basil, (a Couple Leaves For Each Burger)
  • FOR THE GLAZE:
  • 16 ounces, fluid Balsamic Vinegar
  • 1 Tablespoon Sugar

Preparation

For the burgers: Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to high heat.

In a large bowl, mix together beef, sausage, salt and vinegar. Shape into 5-6 patties and use your thumb to create a small well in the center of each one.

Place patties directly on the hottest part of the grill and grill uncovered for 5-6 minutes or until juices begin to appear at the top of the burger. Flip burgers and cook an additional 4-5 minutes on the opposite side. Add cheese slices during the last few minutes of grilling. Remove from the grill onto a platter and allow to rest for a few minutes.

Meanwhile, for the bread: Preheat oven to 450 F. Use a pastry brush to brush both sides of the bread slices with olive oil. Place on a baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 5-8 minutes, or until bread is golden brown and crisped. Remove from oven when done.

For the glaze: In a small saucepan, heat balsamic vinegar over medium high heat. Whisk often. Once the vinegar begins to boil, sprinkle in sugar. Whisk constantly to prevent burning. Cook until reduced by half and mixture is thick and syrupy. Set aside to cool slightly.

To assemble: Stack burgers, tomato, and basil leaves on a slice of bread. Drizzle with balsamic glaze then finish with the second slice of bread.
