Description

This is a more flavorful take on a classic and is great cold-weather comfort food! Given a choice between this dish or pizza, my teenage son will choose this. Every. Single. Time. If that’s not a LOUDLY ringing endorsement, I don’t know what is.

Ingredients

  • 5 whole Medium-large Potatoes, Peeled And Cubed For Mashing
  • 1-½ pound Lean Ground Round (I've Used As Much As 2 Pounds And It Comes Out Fine)
  • 1 cup Water Or Beef Broth
  • 2 teaspoons Red Cooking Wine
  • 1 Tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce
  • 2 cubes Beef Bouillon
  • 1 cube Chicken Bouillon
  • 1 teaspoon Freshly Ground Black Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Herb Chicken Seasoning
  • 1 Tablespoon Minced Parsley
  • 1 Tablespoon Dried Minced Onion Flakes
  • 1 Tablespoon Garlic Powder OR 2 Cloves Minced Fresh Garlic
  • 1-½ cup Fresh Or Frozen Veggies Of Your Choice. Peas And Carrots Or Mixed Veggies Are More Traditional, But I Personally Use Shredded Carrot And Chopped Mushrooms.
  • 2 cups Shredded Cheddar Cheese, Or The Amount Of Your Preference

Preparation

1. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender. Drain and mash. Set aside. (When I mash potatoes for this recipe, I just mix in a little milk, butter, and pepper to taste.)

2. Preheat oven to 350F.

3. Combine the water or broth with the wine, Worcestershire Sauce, bouillon cubes, pepper, herb chicken seasoning, and parsley. Set aside.

4. In a large skillet, brown the meat. Drain and set aside, leaving just a little bit of grease in the pan. To this, add the onion and garlic, saute over medium heat just until onion begins to brown.

5. Return the meat to the pan and add the mixture from Step 3. Add vegetables. Cook, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid has evaporated.

6. Pour meat/vegetable mixture into a 9×13 casserole dish. Cover with mashed potatoes, and sprinkle the cheese over the potatoes. Bake in preheated oven until cheese melts or potatoes begin to brown.

* If, like in my household, you are sensitive to or prefer less salt, I recommend using low sodium bouillon cubes and broth.

* I have been playing with this recipe a bit, trying to make more of a gravy for the meat mixture, but haven’t come up with anything that sings to me yet. Gravy or no gravy, this is very yummy just the way it is.

Hey, glad you enjoyed it! I made this two weeks ago or so and did it a little differently so that it did have a little gravy to it and it was really yummy! Maybe I’ll go back in and add some notes as to what I did for those who want the gravy!

I *love * this!!!!!! I added about 1/3 of a package of just plain brown gravy mix since it has a thickening agent (could also do 3tsp of flour mixed with 3tsp of cold water)..and it was gravy like!! I’ve had it before as well and there was virtual no taste difference adding the gravy mix but the thicker texture was there!! Just a thought for those who want gravy base :) Thanks for the recipe!!!!

Just made this for dinner and it was yummy!! We made ours with corn and it was good. Wish the sauce was more like gravy instead of a broth but it had great flavor!

Maybe it was the cheese topping> Either way, yay for getting the kids to eat something new!

I thought this was quite tasty, but then, I am a shepherds pie fan. The rest of my family thought it was just average, unfortunately.

Love this recipe! My hubby says it is one of his favorite meals I make and it is better than his Mom’s – which you know means alot! Even my toddler loves it! I have simplified it some (hello, toddler!) by using frozen steam and mash potatoes – still tastes great. I have used corn and carrots as the veggies.
