Here is the recipe to make the fabulous Swedish Pepparkakor that Pippi made on her kitchen floor as the story goes: “That morning Pippi was busy making pepparkakor–a kind of Swedish cookie. She had made an enormous amount of dough and rolled it out on the kitchen floor. ‘Because,’ said Pippi to her little monkey, ‘what earthly use is a baking board when one plans to make at least five hundred cookies?’”
(Makes 4 dozen 3″ heart cookies.)
Cream together the butter and sugar. Dissolve baking soda in the water. Add the molasses and egg, then stir in the remaining ingredients until well blended.
Cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least 4 hours.
Preheat oven to 350ºF.
Roll the dough to 1/8″ thickness on a lightly floured surface. Cut into hearts with a heart cookie cutter and place on an ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake for 8–10 minutes or until edges begin to brown.
Cool on a rack and store in an airtight container.
Enjoy!
