The other day, I woke up with less-than-toasty toes and a familiar yet unwelcome ache in my bones. Still clinging to the memory of summer, we slept with the bedroom window open, and overnight, the temperatures had dipped to near-frost levels. Yay.
I hoped it was just a fluke, but it’s been downright chilly the past few days. So the blender on my counter that’s usually called into healthy smoothie action in the morning has instead been getting the stink eye from me. A cold breakfast is the last thing I want when my feet are cold and I can’t remember where I packed my sweaters.
So today’s Kitchen Talk will be all about warm meals to start off your day. Tell us:
What’s your favorite thing to make when you need a warm breakfast?
Lately, I’ve been whipping up (don’t laugh) fried rice for breakfast. I’ll re-purpose leftovers, cook them with brown rice, butter, and garlic, and sometimes I’ll mix in an egg for added protein. It’s such a satisfying meal that I don’t usually need anything else until early afternoon.
Of course, I can only eat so much fried rice. And they say some parts of the country may be in for another brutal winter, which means we have a lot of cold mornings ahead of us. So do you have any warm breakfast tricks up your sleeve? Come share below!

Most comforting warm breakfast is Irish oatmeal cooked with a pinch of salt, add dried cranberries; when cooked spoon into bowl and add some real maple syrup and toasted chopped walnuts. If it is a Sunday, add a tiny bit of whipped cream. Heaven in a bowl and the satisfaction lasts for hours.

Probably the best thing that happened to me this week was my birthday! Sara

I pack my breakfast to take to work, so on Sundays I make a batch of what I call “veggies and grains” to eat all week. It usually involves onion, bell pepper, zucchini, spinach – sometimes broccoli or asparagus as well. I saute all the veggies in olive oil, then add some sort of grain – usually quinoa/wild rice/brown rice blend, along with some water or stock. I let it simmer until the grains are cooked. Then I top it with whatever sounds good – usually feta, sometimes avocado, sometimes a fried egg. I don’t like sweets for breakfast, so this appeals to me, is healthy, and keeps me full until after my lunchtime workout!

My family loves chorizo and egg scramble tacos – cook some chorizo in a skillet , drain most of the grease add eggs and cook until eggs are soft scrambled scoop into warmed flour tortillas with a little cheese……BOOM, breakfast! I always feel guilty that it’s not that healthy so I try to serve a papaya with a squeeze of lime it’s really a great easy breakfast.

Saturdays are my clean-out-the-fridge day. Many times, I make a huge breakfast casserole with eggs, whatever meat that needs to be used (bacon, sausage, leftover chicken, etc.), some frozen hash browns, cheese (whatever I have) and all the veggies that need to be used–wrinkly tomatoes or peppers are fine, bits of onion that were chopped/not used–you get my drift. I saute the bacon/sausage together, add the onions/peppers, mix with shredded cheese, chopped tomatoes and thawed hash browns. Depending on my mood, I may add a can of green chiles. Add beaten eggs, throw into a casserole, bake for 45-50 minutes. We serve with salsa on the side. Makes a huge casserole that is delicious hot out of the oven, but best of all, it is great re-heated in the microwave all week long at work. I just portion into small containers and grab one each morning. Smells great, tastes delicious, and carries me all the way to lunch–so satisfying.

My all-time favorite warm breakfast is Eggs Benedict but I don’t often make it because it is pretty labor intensive and uses a lot of dishes! Because of that, my go-to warm breakfast is pancakes, which I love, love, love. Another great warm breakfast is PW’s baked french toast. I always have some on hand in the freezer to defrost and bake when I need them and have begun sending them along with whatever dinner meals I prepare for friends and family when somebody died/is sick/had a baby because a warm breakfast is such a comforting thing.

You just can’t go wrong with some sort of eggs…and GREAT bread for toast. Throw in some delicious hot chocolate…and breakfast is on the table.

Scrambled eggs with Velveeta Cheese (only way I would eat them as a kid). Pork roll. Leftover cornbread or a slice of wheat toast.
Come to think of it, it makes a good dinner once in a while!

I love heated, leftover brown rice topped with homemade pico de gallo and a small amount of shredded mont. jack cheese. I realize how strange this combination sounds but to me it is Delicious!

Poached egg over spinach, swiss cheese, pan fried fresh apple ring and smoked sausage. Yum!

I like leftovers for breakfast – just heat in the microwave, minimal prep and clean up. I don’t really like sweets in the morning. When my son visits from college his request is usually a sausage gravy biscuit and egg bake. He is more than happy to take the rest back with him! He will eat dinner leftovers for breakfast too.

We like to make a quick skillet omelet – variations include:
jalapenos with red peppers and green onions and a touch of grated Cheddar – topped with taco sauce
or
a bit of cheese in the middle, topped with chopped artichoke hearts and sliced avocado
or
a plethora of veges to include onions, peppers and spinach
yummo!

Hot oatmeal with either apples and cinnamon or blueberries and flaxseed. I have a slice of whole wheat bread with peanut butter to go with it. Never gets boring.

Cooked oatmeal with tons of nuts and dried fruit. Warms my tummy!

I like scramble eggs with toast. Maybe some salted pan roasted tomatoes if I have time and want to be fancy. Eggs are just the perfect warm breakfast food.

I can’t stomach anything sweet in the morning but still want to eat oats because they’re healthy, so some days I saute some onion, then scramble an egg or 2 in a bowl, dump in about 3/4 cup of oats and a splash of milk, and fry it up like a pancake. I like to top it with a slice of low fat, cheese. Other days I make oatmeal soup or savory oatmeal with peas and onions and eat it with a hardboiled egg on the side for extra protein. If I’m pressed for time and there’s leftovers from supper the night before, then that’s breakfast.

Em’s Famous Overnight Oatmeal Cinnamon Pancakes https://tastykitchen.com/recipes/breakfastbrunch/pancakeswaffles/eme28099s-famous-overnight-oatmeal-cinnamon-pancake/ Oh these are yummy! Really fast to mix up the night before and ready to cook in the morning. We make half-batches for the two of us and he takes the extra to work to munch on as snacks during the day. Very filling and hearty.
Otherwise, pancakes. Banana pancakes, blueberry pancakes, pancakes with jam. Pancakes.

cheesy grits with one of our fresh, soft cooked eggs on top… or a breakfast sammich with pancetta or bacon (both cured by my husband), a soft cooked egg (be alert!) and Irish cheese on an onion roll… mmmmm love breakfast!

Right now, oatmeal. But instead of water, I use apple cider and I add some dried cranberries, almonds, and flax seed. Sooo tasty on a cold morning.

Great question! My hot breakfast – COFFEE! I for one never eat breakfast or lunch, occasionally I will make an egg and toast on the weekend. Now if your talking Holiday, Family get together, Ladies brunch, that’s a horse of a different color. I love to make multiple Quiches, breakfast bake or overnight baked french toast, all served with fresh fruits. Thanks all for your suggestions. Oh, I love the corn beef hash, my fav.

Here in sunny hot-hot-Florida we still make hot large breakfast fare. Oatmeal is a classic and favorite. Scrambled egg bakes are fun. Breakfast tacos, burritos that I make in bulk and freeze. There is always fresh fruit as I am a weekly shopper and grow my own oranges, lemons, limes, bananas, coconuts. I utilize the 7 day a week fresh produce market for any and all seasonal fruits. Sometimes we will on weekends make English muffin sandwiches with loads of cheese in the oven. Florida Home Fries are a favorite also. Smoothies are a go to as well. Pancakes, waffles are favorites too. Happy Day to Everyone! Cheryl

I love the hash idea too, Alaina. That would be a great one to make as a big batch. And wow Sara, that chocolate peanut butter cup baked oatmeal sounds wonderful. Thank you for the ideas!

We find that we perform much better during the day with a little protein in our bellies. And although we eat really healthy, we can’t resist a breakfast with eggs and a bit of meat. So on Sunday afternoons I typically whip up a big batch of something that we can quickly reheat several mornings during the week. I have 4 standby dishes: breakfast tacos, migas, breakfast casserole (you know, the one with bread chunks, eggs, meat and cheese that you prepare the night before, then bake the next morning), or a bunch of fried eggs that we can throw on toasted English muffins. I’m a big batch person, can ya tell? It’s pretty scary how much we like breakfast sausage and bacon and eggs! lol

Here in MN winters are very cold, and very snowy most years. I am not much of a breakfast fan (give me a piece of toast and I’m good) but my daughter eats it every morning. Her favorites are french toast or pancakes from the freezer (I make a huge batch and freeze), cream of wheat, and oatmeal.

I loved baked oatmeal in the morning. My favorite is chocolate peanut butter cup baked oatmeal (from Chocolate Covered Katie blog)!
When I went to Thailand four years ago, the hotel we stayed in served a savory breakfast of rice, stir fried veggies and fried (or maybe they were poached?) eggs. They also had a “western” breakfast for us Americans, but one of our friends really enjoyed the asian style breakfast!

I am a big fan of ‘hash’. I sauté some type of potato or sweet potato with whatever veggies. Peppers, onions, broccoli, greens, tomato, whatever. Then we top it with an over easy egg, some cheese if you feel like it. So good.
We also do a lot of ‘whatever is in the fridge’ frittata. Usually about 3 cups of sautéed veggies, 6 eggs, 1/2 cup cheese, can be baked in the oven in cast iron or cooked on the stovetop and then broiled quick in the oven. Either way, yum.

Breakfast pizza! Crisp pizza crust, sausage gravy ‘sauce’, scrambled eggs with diced onions and peppers, topped with shredded cheddar cheese. House smells savory, pizza is piping hot, and the kitchen is toasty with the oven on. Love it!
