Let’s Talk Apples

Posted by in Kitchen Talk

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Kitchen Talk (Apples)

Pumpkin seems to be the flavor people most associate with fall, and we talked about that a few weeks ago. But let me tell you a secret: I’m not a pumpkin-means-autumn kind of gal. Oh, I do love pumpkin in all its forms, and I even enjoy the flavor in my coffee, But pumpkin, for me, is mostly served in savory side dishes, cooked with coconut milk, shrimp and bacon and a generous amount of onions and garlic. I love that dish and I could eat it all year round. And I do. Which is why I don’t immediately associate pumpkin with fall.

Now apples are a different matter. Which is strange, because apples are also available all year round. And I do enjoy them all year round too. But somehow, it feels like apple desserts are reserved for autumn, when the leaves turn golden and rustle beneath your feet, and mornings are crisp, inviting you to linger in bed just a little bit longer. Maybe I feel that way because fall means it’s apple picking season around these parts, and with access to bushels upon bushels of local apples, the oven gets a workout churning out all kinds of apple creations.

My favorite apple dessert, by far, is Ree’s Scrupmtious Apple Pie. And I’m not just saying that to earn brownie points. It’s like pecan pie meets apple pie, with caramel, and when I’m feeling extra naughty, I’ll top it with (sometimes spiked, shhh) maple whipped cream.

I’m always on the lookout for apple recipes, so now that apple season is upon us, do tell:

What are some of your favorite apple dishes?

Shout out your favorites below and let’s find some new ways to serve them apples. And as always, if you have a recipe link, share that too!

Happy Wednesday, friends!

Apple crisp is my favorite — preferably with vanilla ice cream.

I’m deathly allergic to raw apples, so apples baked or cooked really well are a welcome treat. like others I love them in oatmeal and crisps and a delicate apple strudel. and also with savory dishes. applesauce mixed into my granola before baking lets me cut way down on the fat added. And Philly down there—did you get up on the wrong side of the bed????

I also had the most divine, gooey apple Tarte Tatin in France, but I’ve been unable to find its equal here in Canada.

I haven’t tried these yet, but man, do they look delicious! https://tastykitchen.com/recipes/desserts/apple-fries-fritter-style/

A good apple pie is my “best favorite.” I use part brown sugar with white for the filling, fresh grated nutmeg as well as cinnamon, but the real secret is to throw a handful of redhots on the pie filling before putting on the butter and top crust. I once saw a good cook take a hot pie from the oven and pour cream into the vent hole of the pie. Because the pie was so hot, it kinda cooked into the filling and was not runny by the time it cooled enough to eat. It was divine!

I love making apple hand pies, apple crisp and apple bread pudding. I really want to try my hand at making apple fritters this year!

We have a young apple tree in our back yard that doesn’t produce much yet, but with this year’s apples, DD requested that I make an apple pie. My parents have two apple trees that produced like crazy this year, so I took 2 bags home with me after we visited a couple weeks ago. Last weekend I made apple crisp and applesauce. This weekend I think I am going to make apple bars using my grandma’s recipe. And probably more applesauce.

My mother-in-law gave me the BEST apple cake recipe that had been in the family for years. I only make it in the autumn (have no idea why…maybe because the apples taste better?) and it is devoured by all.

My older son LOVES apple crisp, my son-in-law loves apple pie. Hubs and younger son don’t care. Now my daughter…she’s the true pumpkin lover of the family!!

We just moved to the fruit belt of Michigan this summer, and we are surrounded by apple orchards so I am in HEAVEN. :) I’m having a bowl of steel cut oats with apples and brown sugar for breakfast, and we have a huge batch of applesauce ready to be canned this afternoon.

Like others have mentioned, I like caramel apples, apple pie, apple crisp and spiced apple cake. I’m going to try making some apple cinnamon baked donuts this week, and I also plan to roast a chicken and serve it with homemade stuffing (with lots of celery and diced apples — LOVE apples in stuffing). Last but not least — apple dumplings! :-)

Apple cake! It has to be heavy in the apples. It’s like a spice cake with apple chunks in it. Also, I was reminded by a visit to see local donut shop how much I love apple fritters. I need to find a recipe for that. Of course apple turnovers are awesome too. Like little hand-held apple pies.

I love making a lot of apple sauce and canning it up. Tastes so good alone, on ice cream, or with a pork roast. Tho growing up in an egg free house I also love to use apple sauce in place of eggs in a lot or baking recipes. I also do apple pies, apple crisp, apple tarts, and apple chips. lol Apple overload, but I’m lucky enough to have my mom’s apple tree at my disposal. Apple season is definately one of my most favorite seasons. :)

I just love apples! My favorite is warm cinnamon and apples oatmeal for breakfast. It’s so warm comforting and almost tastes like apple crisp, but healthy!

I drink gallons of fresh-pressed apple cider in the fall! I also use a splash of it in a great, easy smothered-in-onion pork chop recipe I really should share here on TK…

Never throw away overripe apples!

When I have apples that get too soft to eat raw, I love making apple compote or apple sauce with them. I just put them in a saucepan with a little lemon juice and sucralose (or sugar) and boil them until they’re soft. Then if I want apple sauce I puree them. Delicious over yogurt, ice cream, pancakes, or on its own.

Gosh, we love apples year round here in sunny Florida. Frozen apple treats (posted on TK in my recipe box) Apple smoothies, Mom’s Apple-Clove and Honey crumb pie, Honey-Apple & Carrot Soup (posted on TK in recipe box) the list is endless like my creativity! Have a great week everyone. Cheryl.

I love warm apple crisp!

I love freshly baked apple pie…and apple crumble.

Beatrice K on 10.1.2014

Apple slice, brown sugar, cinnamon rolled up in a crescent roll (from a can) with more brown sugar on top and pop it in the oven. So simple and so tasty.

While I love apple desserts I also love apples in hot cereal, savory apple sauces, and sauteed apples over chicken, pork, or tempeh!

Honestly, I love apple anything! But I have been constantly making apple pies and apple galettes. I personally love how the galettes focus so much on the fruit!

Yes, we still belong to a community.
Yes, we still realize our actions impact the whole, and the whole of society impacts us.
No, we are not isolationists.

When the weather cools I love to cook big pots of food on weekends, so that I can have leftovers for dinner on those busy weeknights. And one of my favorites is a big vat of pork and sauerkraut with onions and apples. The sweet apples melt into the dish and add just enough sweetness to offset the tart kraut. Yea for fall! Yea for apples!

I love apple crisp, spiced apple cider, apple cider doughnuts and carmel apples
