Pie vs. Bread

Posted by in Looks Delicious!

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Pie vs. Bread

It’s the day after the Thanksgiving Throwdown and there was some mighty fine food being thrown. The dessert round was a battle between pecan pie and pumpkin bread pudding, so we figured it would be fun to have a little re-enactment of that match here today. It’ll be Team B (for Bread Pudding) against Team P (for Pecan Pie) wrestling for a spot on your holiday table.

Anything involving dessert is worth re-enacting, right?

First up, Team B. Moist, rich, comforting bread pudding. In a variety of flavors so you can use your favorite.

Team P struts in with pecan pie in different incarnations: bars, muffins, cheesecake, or just dressed up with chocolate.

You be the judge! Will it be pie or bread pudding on your table? Cast your vote!

I have to choose?!?!?!?! Between Bread Pudding and Pie?!?!?!?!?!?!?! The ability to choose between the two is not a part of my being……

Brandi on 11.18.2010

Looks like I’ll be doing both. I was going to make 2 kinds of pie, but after watching THE Throwdown, my husband is now hankerin’ for some bread pudding.

Sallyk on 11.18.2010

Generally speaking I prefer bread pudding, but on Thanksgiving — it’s pie.

pam on 11.18.2010

Bread Pudding with a crusty Almond glaze over it is my favorite dessert….so I was excited to watch the Throw down and see the Pumpkin Bread Pudding….GLORY. By the way…Bobby has lost touch with reality…NO POTATOES??? Thanks for sharing these…

NormaB on 11.18.2010

I’d definitely choose pie over bread pudding!

Nan on 11.18.2010

It has to be Pecan Pie. I like some bread puddings but not in place of Pie at Thanksgiving!

I have taped the show and will watch on Wednesday with both my girls after they arrive at my house for the weekend.

Deanna on 11.18.2010

That’s the beauty of Thanksgiving – you get to have an assortment of desserts! :) IF I HAD to choose I would choose the bread pudding, but my husband would choose the pie.

Cheri on 11.18.2010

Since I was a little girl we’ve always had both…
Pies, and grandma’s recipe for bread pudding (complete with a whiskey sauce)

Cassie W on 11.18.2010

We are serving both! Our bread pudding is adapted from Ree’s recipe and also features pecans.

It will def be a pie or two…just haven’t decided which ones. For me, bread pudding is for another day.
Loved you on Throwdown last night. Sorry ladies but we are not Flay fans. After I told hubby all about Ree tho, we both sat down and watched and loved every minute.

Pat C on 11.18.2010

Bread – Good! But PIE! Oh my – has to be pie on our table.

Sally on 11.18.2010

As a family tradition, it has to be pie, although we always have pumpkin pie with lots of whipped cream. Pecan pie might have to be added if I can your recipe for that sauce that looked and sounded so good! And it’s so nice that a country girl beat Bobby on throwdown!

Sarah Torgeson on 11.18.2010

Well, if I could find the recipe for Bobby’s bread pudding — it would be BOTH! (As well as an apple pie for those “others” who insist on it.

Barbara on 11.18.2010

It’s not which is my favorite, it’s which I want that particular day, but for Thanksgiving, it will be both! Why not?

The program was so good last night!!

Jess on 11.18.2010

Pie, fo sho!

tennilleh on 11.18.2010

Definately PIE!! I’m much more a cake girl than pie…BUT…I just don’t care for bread pudding. I’ve tried! It looks great, sounds great, even the thought of it is great. It’s always the texture that turns me off.

slickquilter on 11.18.2010

Who has just one! dessert on Thanksgiving. I’ll make fruit and pumpkin pies to share and a pecan pie just for myself :-) The various bread puddings sound great–I’ll have to try one or two or three. I hope everyone has a thanks-full Thanksgiving.

I love bread pudding, but it’ll have to be the pecan pie! What’s Thanksgiving without pie???

Susan on 11.18.2010

I will definately be having the pecan pie. My family would run me out on a rail if it didn’t show up for TG! But I’ll also be giving that pumpkin bread pudding a go as soon as Ree or BFlay post the recipe. That pudding at the throwdown looked so good!

MOV on 11.18.2010

Let’s do a hybrid: Pie-Bread! (Add a little alcohol and call it a day.)

There is something about “bread” and “pudding” that should be kept apart. Not together. Sorry. I’m not into the “bread pudding” whole soggy thing going on. It kind of grosses me out. No matter how much my husband tries to tell me it’s sooooo good! Therefore, there will be plenty of pies at my house! :)

Carolin on 11.18.2010

It’s no contest, team P wins hands down.

em on 11.18.2010

can i have both on my Thanksgiving table? :)

Jenny on 11.18.2010

Pie, Pie, Pie!

PIE! I want to make all those pies you just pictures they look like they would taste AWESOME!

Jennie D. on 11.18.2010

Can’t I have both?! Ummmm… if I HAVE to choose, then pie!

Michelle from Normal on 11.18.2010

We’ll probably have pie, but my vote is for the pudding…will definately make it.

Well, I don’t like brea pudding, so its pie pie pie for us. Pecan Pie is my husbands all time favorite dessert, and he has also requested chocolate cheesecake, so those will be donning our table this thanksgiving!

Janet on 11.18.2010

No doubt about it, Pecan pie and pumpkin pie and maybe chocolate.

Penny W on 11.18.2010

If given a choice I would always choose pie. Isn’t pie one of the four food groups?

Shirley on 11.18.2010

Ree and team (family and friends)—the throw-down was such great fun to watch. The only way that I would have improved it was to have had Marlboro Man deliver the challenge in person on his trusty steed! But the other cowboy was eye candy, too.
Bobby made a major goof omitting the mashed potatoes. While his brussel sprouts were amazingly creative, you just can’t beat wonderful mashed potatoes for THANKSGIVING. Christmas–perhaps, but NOT on turkey day.
As for the dessert—pie is the order of the day. It could be pumpkin, apple or any pie that is the family favorite. The crowning of the pecan pie with the whiskey sauce was inspired! Bread pudding, no matter in what disguise, just won’t make the cut.
It would have been fun to have watched Bobby retreat on a horse, galloping into the sunset back to the big city!

Brandie in Carmel on 11.18.2010

Pie, but not pecan. There are only two members of the family who would eat pecan pie. We’ll have apple, red raspberry, and possibly pumpkin.

Clabbergirl on 11.18.2010

How can you have bread pudding for dessert when there are three types of dressing and stuffing to boot? Pie in my eye!

Laurie O. - WI on 11.18.2010

Both look yummy, but it will be pie for us……..

thunja on 11.18.2010

Pie!!!!

Teresa on 11.18.2010

I want both!

Jo on 11.18.2010

At the dessert bar, I go for bread pudding every time. But Thanksgiving is a PIE day, all the way!

LOVED the show last night, plan to watch it over and over again.! Pie of course, but I hope I can find Bobby’s breadpudding recipe on foodnetwork, gotta go look. You should have him post it here please.

Donna @ WayMoreHomemade on 11.18.2010

Team B.

Sorry Ree. Not a pecan fan. I make pecan pie bars for my daddy, but that’s the only pecan thing I’ll make.

Unless we’re talking Apple Pie… then it’s Team P all the way.

But I just love the texture and flavor of a good traditional or chocolate bread pudding.

JaneO on 11.18.2010

We always have pumpkin and mince meat pies (I’m allergic to corn syrup, so pecan pie is not an option). I’d definitely like to get the recipe for Bobby Flays pumpkin bread pudding – I already searched online, haven’t found it yet. I think he used pumpkin bread, but most recipes I’ve found use french bread with a pumpkin mix poured over. Has anyone else found it?

Meilssa on 11.18.2010

We love pie in our family- never met one that I didn’t like. :-) I wish I liked bread pudding. I’ve really tried, since I’m a Southern girl, but I just don’t like it!

Sarah T on 11.18.2010

Pie of course. Bread pudding just is not my thing.

kary d on 11.18.2010

My guys say pecan pie is toooo sweet, so it would have to be the bread pudding.

Beverly on 11.18.2010

I love pecan pie! Thanksgiving wouldn’t be Thanksgiving without it.

bjaye16 on 11.18.2010

PIE! ….and would love that cream sauce you drizzled over it.
Is that your hard sauce?

Cheryl on 11.18.2010

Tradition is important on a special holiday like Thanksgiving, when it’s all about the food I would go with the pecan pie. But on other days, like Christmas, I love bread puddings, yummy.

Sue K on 11.18.2010

It has to be PIE for this family. Your pecan pie looks awesome. And the whiskey cream sauce looks over the top. Do you have that recipe??? I’ll have to do a search and see if it is here on TK. Fun, fun show. Hubby even enjoyed it!

Jenney on 11.18.2010

Definately Pie!! You did such a fabulous job on the Throwdown!! Congrats on your big victory!!!

mom2AK on 11.18.2010

Pecan pie! Texas roots mean Pecan is a staple.
