What’s Your Food Obsession?

Posted by in Kitchen Talk

Tasty Kitchen Blog: What's Your Food Obsession? Guest post by Jaden Hair of Steamy Kitchen.

I have a problem.

I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a supermarket without adding a package of fatty porky goodness in my cart. Or approached a new menu without scanning first for a dish containing the “b” word. My weakness? An all-you-can-eat breakfast buffet.

Some might call it a obsession; my husband just accepts my problem and counts his blessings that my thrill is cheap. Because my fixation could have been diamonds, Gucci purses or something that would require a line of credit to fulfill.

But I think my addiction has rubbed off on a certain little someone who’s barely even tall enough to reach the goods at the buffet line.

And like any obsession … it starts with one.

But with enough focus, bravery, stretch and dexterity …

One can easily say, “Like mother, like son.”

What’s your food obsession? Come on—we all have one! Though I fully understand that yours may be healthier, like chickpeas or wheatgrass (which tastes like 5th grade phys-ed class field hockey rotation).

omg i love tacos. i’m sorry but the BEST tacos in the world are not found in ANY state of the union cept Arizona. i’m not gonna even tell you what or who makes the best tacos the best cept they are not the ones you are havin. ha ! take that ! (it’s my secret spot and it’s open 24/7 and they don’t speak english).

ok here is some clues…white corn hand made home made tortillas dipped in hot oil after the carefully chosen pulled and grilled pork is place inside and then mounds of greens are added with plenty of cilantro on the top. liberal doses of hot sauce across the top (not gonna tell ya the best hot sauce) oh and don’t forget the grated cheese of several varieties over the greens (not gonna tell ya the best greens).

i’ve already said too much.. step AWAY from my favorite taco stand.

Ice cream, especially cherry chocolate with magic shell. But any good ice cream will do.

Kristen on 6.18.2010

I make biscuits like…every other day at least. My husband eats them every morning for breakfast. I usually do to. Maybe for lunch too. Afternoon snack. We had some for dinner a couple days ago. I scrambled eggs and crumbled in some seaside cheddar (omg)–put it on a biscuit. Soft butter, homemade strawberry jam. Blackberry preserves. Drizzled with wildflower honey. I just love biscuits.

My obsession is scones. I can’t pass up a good scone, and I make them as often as I can while avoiding the “honey, is it ok if we eat something OTHER than scones this week?” conversation…

Nancy Shaner on 6.18.2010

ICE CREAM! A day is not complete without some ice cream. I like to try the local shops when I travel. Latest find, Oberweis Dairy in Bradley, IL. so good.

Melita Fain on 6.18.2010

Oh I LOVE tacos. I could eat tacos/mexican dishes 5 days a week. The other two days I am suffering withdrawals. Tacos are my favorite right next to burritos.

Kathy F. on 6.18.2010

NUTS!!! All kinds, every kind and of course peanut butter – daily!

Laura on 6.18.2010

Cheese. I can easily eat obscene amounts of cheese if left to my own devices. An entire round of brie? No problem. This can be VERY dangerous.

cmac on 6.18.2010

Current obsession is hot sauce. I go through bottles of the stuff!

Lily G on 6.18.2010

My food obsession is vegetables. I’m always worried I’m not eating enough of them. But don’t worry–I eat plenty of dessert to make up for the fact that I eat vegetables. It’s a win-win situation!

Breakfast food of any kind! I could eat breakfast 24 / 7 if my family would allow it. I LOVE IHop!!! Pancakes, waffles, french toast, bacon, sausage, eggs of every variety! Yum!

My obsessions change often. I was once obsessed with watercress and ate 2 lbs in 2 days. Don’t have to paint a picture for ya about what that did to my system!! whooo fiber!

Today, I’m obsessed with BASIL! Basil on everything! It’s like someone bottled up the feeling of “fresh” and planted it in the ground!

Susan on 6.18.2010

I am a creature of whimsy and go on benders, obsessing over a certain food. This past year it’s been anything made using sour cherries. I don’t see an end now that cherry season is nearly here!

Hillary on 6.18.2010

Cheese!! Any kind, anytime! My fridge is never without the stuff!

With the hot weather descending upon us after an unusually cold spring, Paul Newman’s lemonade. I could drink gallons and gallons of it everyday. And it’s made with sugar and not corn syrup. I don’t dare put it in my grocery cart. I moan and whimper and walk on

Food obsessions; so many to indulge, so little time. I’m with you on bacon! I also love garlic, thank goodness so does the man so we at least cancel each other out. Bacon and garlic together nearly makes me wilt from happiness. And I should not leave out sweet potatoes, as long as they are prepared savory (I don’t like them sugary). And french fries, it’s so difficult to turn away from a good french fry, especially a good sweet potato french fry. And last but not least, On The Border margaritas. And blackberries.

Katie on 6.18.2010

Cheese – I but these expensive cheeses to make a dish and then I start slicing little slices, before the end of the week, I’ve eaten $10 worth of Gruyere and I want to smack myself!

Mary H. on 6.18.2010

Chocolate, fudge, chocolate!

BB Tyree on 6.18.2010

Coca-Cola. I have tried many, many, many times to quit. I can’t HANDLE not having a Coke.

Alice on 6.18.2010

Sigh. Macaroni and Cheese. I can’t pass it up even if I know it’s not going to be the best. Every restaurant, family reunion, picnic, etc. that offers it? I go for it.

Cheese – has to be cheese. I hated it as a kid but now… lets just say it is a good reason you dont pay for my healthcare ;)

Mags on 6.18.2010

Fresh fruit! I’m especially powerless in the face of strawberries, mangos, and raspberries.

on 6.17.2010

At the moment it’s a toss up between summer squash, cherries and peaches. I tend to obsess about whatever is in season locally. I’m anxiously watching our plum tree for ripe ones and the tomato plants for my long love affair with BLTs.

Lisa @14monthsto50 on 6.17.2010

I rarely let myself buy it, and at least now I use Annie’s when I’m weak, but macaroni and cheese. Any kind of noodle really, any kind of cheese, with butter. My true comfort food.

Nat on 6.17.2010

Peanut butter. I would bake with it even more frequently if one of my dear friends wasn’t deathly allergic!

Ai Shigemi on 6.17.2010

Any kind of noodles!!! Of course includes pasta. I’ll be able to live on only them for my whole life;)

FETA! I put it in everything…

Pam on 6.17.2010

Oh, I LOVE bacon! I recently had the most delicious, crispy bacon in a restaurant when traveling–I can’t get it out of my mind! I actually wonder if it were deep fat fried. Someone told me to try baking bacon! I did, and it is very good, but doesn’t have the same crunchy, melt-in-your mouth deliciousness that restaurant bacon had! I do recommend baking bacon, though. It is easy to clean up, you can do dozens of pieces at the same time, and you can bake it to whatever crispiness you want. Just cover a baking sheet with a lip around the edge with foil. Lay the strips of bacon out, not touching. Put it in a cold oven, turn on to 400 degrees. I cook mine about 25 minutes, you will have to watch after 20 minutes to see how fast your oven cooks it. I turn the pan around half way through for even cooking, drain the grease after about 20 minutes, and it crisps right up after that. Google “baking bacon”, there are tons of methods, but all are pretty similar to this. No spattering, just let the grease congeal and throw the foil away for quick cleanup.

Lara H. on 6.17.2010

French fries. That is what I look for first on a menu. Though any salty/sweet combo (chocolate covered pretzels/popcorn/BBQ Fritos/etc) is a very close second. Wait a second, fries WITH a chocolate milkshake…mmmmmmmmmmmm

Jim Washburn on 6.17.2010

I cannot control myself in the presence of good, freshly fried corn tortilla chips and either a good Mexican salsa or chile con queso. Same goes for a keg of good beer.
