Beginning today, we’ve made some important changes in the Review/Rating system here on Tasty Kitchen!
As many of you know, Tasty Kitchen was launched less than a year ago. It’s been just wonderful watching so many of you join, participate, and share your best dishes with the community of awesome folks here. All bias aside, it has seriously become my new go-to recipe source whenever I’m in search of something specific.
Of course, all new sites are works in progress and I knew from the get-go that I’d need to continually tweak things here and there to make everything work perfectly. One of the most important areas that has needed work—and the number one source of concern from the community—has always been the Ratings/Reviews system for recipes. As many of you pointed out, it was a little too easy to click on the red mitt rating system and assign arbitrary ratings to this recipe or that, and many who submitted recipes found it frustrating (rightly so) that anyone could click on one or two mitts and lower the overall rating of their recipes. Also, it was a little too easy to accidentally click on the wrong mitt rating—and with no way for this to be undone, the rating stuck.
Another common complaint: the Reviews section. The “Reviews” were actually more in line with a regular “Comments” section—while there were many legitimate reviews from folks who’d made the recipe in question, there were also just general comments relating to the recipe, things like “This looks yummy” or “I make something similar to this at Christmastime every year.” Both categories of dialog are absolutely welcome and an important aspect of the community—but we realized over time that it was important for Reviews and Comments to be separate.
So here are the changes, which just went into effect today:
REVIEW:
COMMENT:
1. On recipes, Reviews and Comments will be in separate (tabbed) sections. You must be logged in to leave either a Review (feedback if you’ve made the dish) or Comment (general discussion/remarks)
2. In order to leave a Rating (1 through 5 mitts), you must also leave a Review. Assigning the mitt rating is part of the Review dialog box.
These changes should really make a difference when it comes to searching for tried and true recipes. You can read honest Reviews from those who’ve made, served, and gobbled down the recipe, and you can read general feedback from others in the Comments. Best of both worlds!
A few important things to keep in mind:
* All Reviews posted before today will automatically revert to Comments. There really wasn’t any way for the system to discern the difference in past Reviews/Comments, so to be on the safe side, we’ve made them all Comments. If you have tried and reviewed recipes here on Tasty Kitchen and would like your Review to be included in a recipe’s overall rating, feel free to go ahead and leave a new Review.
* All Mitt Ratings before today have been erased. We realize this is a radical move and will mean that we are all, in essence, “starting from scratch” with our recipe ratings. However, we felt that it was important to the overall integrity of Tasty Kitchen’s ratings system to begin with a blank slate and remove all ratings from the old system, which was fraught with error. Don’t worry, though—I intend to make my way through many of my favorite recipes I’ve tried and bring the ratings up to date. In no time, the ratings will be built back up again.
* You will not be able to review and rate your own recipe.
* You can only rate and review a recipe once. If for any reason you want to change a review or rating that you’ve made, you can now delete your review AND rating, and leave a new one.
* If you’re used to sorting recipe searches by rating, keep in mind that the pages will turn up empty/scarce while the ratings being to repopulate throughout the site. To help with that process, we encourage you to go back to the recipes you’ve tried and review them.
And that’s it!
Implementing these changes ensures that all ratings are based on reviews left by those who have actually tried the recipe. So while it may be painful to see everything reset to zero, in the long run, this will make the recipe ratings a more reliable gauge of people’s actual experience with the recipe.
I LOVE YOU, MAN!
Thank you for being patient, not only throughout this post…but during this small adjustment period! I’m confident this new change will be a super improvement for the recipe community here on Tasty Kitchen.
Ree

yea! glad for the change.

Ree, there is glitch at the moment. If I’ve posted a review for a dish in the past, the review now has gone into the “comments” tab, which is ok. So if now I want to post a review of the same dish into the “review” tab, it won’t let me, and won’t let me rate it. It says that I’d already reviewed the dish, even though the first review was moved to the comments. I was trying to review and rate your white risotto a moment ago, and wasn’t able to because of this. Another thing, sometimes people don’t have the time to write a review for a dish, but are likely to leave a rating, since it only takes one click. I wonder if it’ll affect the amount of feedback the dishes get.

I really do like these enhancements. This is a great improvement, and I especially like that a person can’t rate his or her own recipes. I never rated mine, but I always suspected that others would rate their own. How else would a brand spankin’ new recipe get five mitts before anyone even had a chance to try it? :~)
This way, the mitts are ratings from peers, and I like this a lot better. Thanks for the improvements!

I love the changes, because there is nothing more frustrating than reading comments when you need a review! Thanks! Also is there a place where you can request recipes?? Like, for instance, I had a delicious couscous w/ mascapone cheese dish at a dinner theater last night and would love to know the recipe. Sometimes others can help. Do we have a place for something that?
erinsue1 on 5.17.2010
Looking forward to getting the comment/review issue worked out… I want to leave reviews for a few but can’t because of my comment previously. Glad to see it’s not just me!
Cindy on 5.17.2010
Great changes! One thing that has always bothered me is when someone rates a recipe after they’ve revised it by making ingredient substitutions. Most likely it won’t be as good as my tested recipe if it’s altered!
Ree | The Pioneer Woman on 5.17.2010
Yep, we’re definitely getting the same behavior (after it worked just fine in beta mode)…Flash is on the scene!
Jenny on 5.17.2010
Great idea, I think it’s definitely a change for the better!
KimS on 5.17.2010
We had the same problem. I’ve only reviewed one recipe but I loved it so much I wanted to be sure it had a review. When I went to add my review, it said I had already reviewed it. I can see my old review as a comment but I don’t seem to be able to remove that.
Stephanie Bauer on 5.17.2010
Yay! I was about to comment here that I tried to review a recipe that I LOVE, but it tells me that I must provide both a Rating and a Review in order to submit, which I was doing.
Glad I don’t have to tell ya about that anymore!
Go Flash!

Okie doke—my little magician is behind the scenes fixing the little glitch. Thanks for the quick feedback, guys! It should be good to go in no time. My little magician is very speedy.
His name is Flash.

I agree with amanda. That would be a GREAT feature! My box also is overflowing, which makes it tough to find a single recipe.
Thanks for all you do! This is a fantastic recipe resource! My go-to site now!
Nancy on 5.17.2010
Awesome first step to upgrading, Ree!! It always annoyed me when I wanted to check a review to see if the person altered the posted recipe in any way, just to find comments like, “That sounds yummy.” Thanks for your hard work and creativity!!!
Julie (Bananas for Bourbon) on 5.17.2010
Thanks for explaining the new system. I think it’s a really great idea! I’ve definitely clicked on a 1 or 2 mitt rating totally by accident, just a random click on the page, and felt bad for permanently lowering the overall rating for a dish I’m sure deserved much higher. Heh.
amanda on 5.17.2010
Thanks for the awesome upgrade!! I love the new functionality!
Any chance of getting “dividers” for our community recipes box? Or is there a way to do this already and I am just oblivious?
I don’t know about every one else’s, but my community box is pushing 500 recipes! So many wonderful people sharing tasty recipes, and just not enough time! I have a hard time finding what I am looking for in there most times. If I could filter it in sections (desserts, mains etc), that would be fabulous. The category filter has always just shown me the recipes in the reverse date order (oldest to newest).
jbfanguy on 5.17.2010
I tried going back to review a recipe and it popped up that I’ve already reviewed it, yet it doesn’t show up.
AMC on 5.17.2010
Excited for the new changes and I am especially glad about the ratings I have gone to rate it 5 stars and hit 4 stars on most of the recipes so I am glad!!
Amy from She Wears Many Hats (missamy) on 5.17.2010
Great idea! And I could’ve hardly explained that so clearly.
The Sugar Tree on 5.17.2010
Great idea!
But I am having trouble leaving a review. It keeps telling me I need both a rating and review. I have both, but when I click “submit,” it just gives me the message again.
Am I missing something??
Liz on 5.17.2010
Guess I need to get back in the kitchen and try some new things now. Thanks for all the hard work to make the TK a great resource!!

YAY…I think this is an excellent decision…I really want to know what people thought of the recipe AFTER they have made it so that I can learn from their experience with the dish…thank you so much for making this most needed change..
JanisMiller on 5.17.2010
Great idea. I often become frustrated wading through several comments to get to a review by someone who has actually tried the recipe. Looking forward to benefiting from this needed change.
Jenn Marie on 5.17.2010
Wonderful tweaks! And good incentive to go back through and find old and new favorites.
Erika (TK) on 5.17.2010
monkeetrouble7 and vale, shoot me a message and I’ll look into it for you!
alice on 5.17.2010
This is a fantastic idea and will streamline everything so nicely! Bravo to the TK team!
Ree | The Pioneer Woman on 5.17.2010
Guys, I’ll be checking here to see if any problems come up with rating/reviewing past recipes. Keep in mind that you can’t Review/Rate your own recipe. (I tried this when we were beta testing this new change, experimenting on one of my own recipes, and I kept telling our developer “it doesn’t work! it doesn’t work”…and sure enough, it was my own recipe I was practicing on. Ha!)
patiodaddio on 5.17.2010
P.S. Now if I could only add P-Dub-style photos to the recipe directions…
patiodaddio on 5.17.2010
Ree – I like the changes! You did a stellar job of explaining and justifying them.
Thanks to all the TK folks for providing such a great resource.
bjdfh on 5.17.2010
GREAT IDEA!
vale on 5.17.2010
I think this is a good idea, but I tried to go back to one of my favorite recipes I’ve found in this site, to give it the 5 mitts it deserves, and the system says I’ve already entered a review! (I haven’t, even though there is a comment from me from several months ago). Please look into it
Kathy713 on 5.17.2010
I like the separation of comments and reviews. I love looking at the recipes, but sometimes only found mitten ratings instead of actual reviews which I would have preferred. Thanks for the change.
Kendra on 5.17.2010
I love the changes, however, I’m trying to write a review and it isn’t letting me! I gave it a rating and a review and then nothing!
kitchenpookie on 5.17.2010
Dang it! Now I can’t re-vote my zucchini relish recipe over and over again…..(it’s the only one I’ve submitted so far!) Love the site and changes………keep on, keepin’ on, my friends!
Tanantha P. on 5.17.2010
This is a great change and it will encourage people to be more precise on their judgment. Thanks for doing it!
Ree | The Pioneer Woman on 5.17.2010
Thanks, guys, for your feedback.
Natalie, that’s definitely something we can add down the line. I’ll always be looking for new ways to improve functionality and add helpful bells and whistles, so I’ll keep track of suggestions like yours as we move forward. Thank you!
Natalie | Perry's Plate on 5.17.2010
Awesome changes! And a small price to pay for a wonderful system! Will there ever be a notification system that will shoot us emails when one of our recipes receives a comment or a review?
lakeloverhh on 5.17.2010
Thanks Ree! That is a wonderful change.
WendyRealtor on 5.17.2010
Thanks Ree for always looking out for us! I think this is a great move and “starting from scratch” will provide more meaningful ratings. And the comments, always great, will be just that — Comments!
Janette Toolson on 5.17.2010
Ree, this is going to be great! Thanks so much!
Val on 5.17.2010
Are the most recent reviews and comments going to show first rather than last?
Thank goodness for this change. Having to go through 4 pages of “oh my…this looks good…someday I’ll make it” comments before finally finding an actual review was one of my biggest peeves about the site. Very exciting news, indeed!
Natasha R on 5.17.2010
I like these changes! It’s a lot easier to filter the comments/reviews now.
Liz on 5.17.2010
Yes! I was noticing this a lot over the past few weeks (I FINALLY registered). This is a welcome change!
Erica Lea on 5.17.2010
Yes, I think this change for the better. I really like the separation of comments and reviews. Thank you for caring enough to make a “radical” decision!
Jessica @ How Sweet on 5.17.2010
I think this is a GREAT idea! I have always been confused by the ratings, but seeing no reviews. Awesome, Ree – thanks!
