Wonderful (and Important!) Changes

Posted by in Miscellaneous

(Photo: Flourless Chocolate Cupcakes submitted by Elana’s Pantry.)

Beginning today, we’ve made some important changes in the Review/Rating system here on Tasty Kitchen!

As many of you know, Tasty Kitchen was launched less than a year ago. It’s been just wonderful watching so many of you join, participate, and share your best dishes with the community of awesome folks here. All bias aside, it has seriously become my new go-to recipe source whenever I’m in search of something specific.

Of course, all new sites are works in progress and I knew from the get-go that I’d need to continually tweak things here and there to make everything work perfectly. One of the most important areas that has needed work—and the number one source of concern from the community—has always been the Ratings/Reviews system for recipes. As many of you pointed out, it was a little too easy to click on the red mitt rating system and assign arbitrary ratings to this recipe or that, and many who submitted recipes found it frustrating (rightly so) that anyone could click on one or two mitts and lower the overall rating of their recipes. Also, it was a little too easy to accidentally click on the wrong mitt rating—and with no way for this to be undone, the rating stuck.

Another common complaint: the Reviews section. The “Reviews” were actually more in line with a regular “Comments” section—while there were many legitimate reviews from folks who’d made the recipe in question, there were also just general comments relating to the recipe, things like “This looks yummy” or “I make something similar to this at Christmastime every year.” Both categories of dialog are absolutely welcome and an important aspect of the community—but we realized over time that it was important for Reviews and Comments to be separate.

So here are the changes, which just went into effect today:

REVIEW:

Picture 87

COMMENT:

Picture 84

1. On recipes, Reviews and Comments will be in separate (tabbed) sections. You must be logged in to leave either a Review (feedback if you’ve made the dish) or Comment (general discussion/remarks)

Picture 86

2. In order to leave a Rating (1 through 5 mitts), you must also leave a Review. Assigning the mitt rating is part of the Review dialog box.

These changes should really make a difference when it comes to searching for tried and true recipes. You can read honest Reviews from those who’ve made, served, and gobbled down the recipe, and you can read general feedback from others in the Comments. Best of both worlds!

A few important things to keep in mind:

* All Reviews posted before today will automatically revert to Comments. There really wasn’t any way for the system to discern the difference in past Reviews/Comments, so to be on the safe side, we’ve made them all Comments. If you have tried and reviewed recipes here on Tasty Kitchen and would like your Review to be included in a recipe’s overall rating, feel free to go ahead and leave a new Review.

* All Mitt Ratings before today have been erased. We realize this is a radical move and will mean that we are all, in essence, “starting from scratch” with our recipe ratings. However, we felt that it was important to the overall integrity of Tasty Kitchen’s ratings system to begin with a blank slate and remove all ratings from the old system, which was fraught with error. Don’t worry, though—I intend to make my way through many of my favorite recipes I’ve tried and bring the ratings up to date. In no time, the ratings will be built back up again.

* You will not be able to review and rate your own recipe.

* You can only rate and review a recipe once. If for any reason you want to change a review or rating that you’ve made, you can now delete your review AND rating, and leave a new one.

* If you’re used to sorting recipe searches by rating, keep in mind that the pages will turn up empty/scarce while the ratings being to repopulate throughout the site. To help with that process, we encourage you to go back to the recipes you’ve tried and review them.

And that’s it!

Implementing these changes ensures that all ratings are based on reviews left by those who have actually tried the recipe. So while it may be painful to see everything reset to zero, in the long run, this will make the recipe ratings a more reliable gauge of people’s actual experience with the recipe.

I LOVE YOU, MAN!

Thank you for being patient, not only throughout this post…but during this small adjustment period! I’m confident this new change will be a super improvement for the recipe community here on Tasty Kitchen.

Ree

Very helpful revisions… but I just tried to leave 2 different reviews and they didn’t post. Flash…. have you fixed the problem yet?
I’ll try again tomorrow. ;0)

I like this change too but I tried to submit a review (with a rating) 2 times today and it did not submit. Maybe I need more basic instructions? HELP!

Sleepy4, to remove a recipe from your recipe box, simply click on the recipe title to bring you to the recipe page. On the right side, you will see “Remove from Recipe Box” where you used to see “Add to Recipe Box.” Simply click on that, and the recipe will be removed from your recipe box.

Mamadallama on 5.17.2010

These are welcome changes. It will be nice to have meaningful reviews & mitt statuses but still have a comment section. Thanks, Ree!

Sunny on 5.17.2010

I loooove these changes!! Thank you so much, Ree!

Kate M on 5.17.2010

Those are some much needed changes! I am glad that the reviews willl be real reviews. :) Thanks. I love TK

Still trying to write a review and leaving a rating on a completely fanstastic recipe. I won’t go though. Help?

Barb Still on 5.17.2010

OH MY GOSH!!! You have nailed one of my HUGEST pet peeves You have made the best change EVER!!! I hate it when someone reviews and says “Looks yummy”, or “I have never tried this but my Mom’s recipe for this is better” or “I used steak instead of chicken, I used rutabaga instead of potatoes, and I did not have cheese so I used spinach” or my final favorite.. a 1 star rating because “I don’t like lobster” for a recipe such as lobster bisque.. I wish “the other sites” would incorporate the same rules.. LOVE IT!!!

Anne on 5.17.2010

This is a great change. It was a little frustrating to see comments in the reviews section when I really wanted to see how the recipe worked out for people that actually made it.

Yes, wonderful changes! Thank you, Ree!

I can’t wait for RECIPE BOX CHANGES to come soon!! It’s impossible to sort through them, and the current system is choppy at best.

christieRS on 5.17.2010

Thank you! I would sift through tons of comments looking for people who actually made the recipe!

traci v. on 5.17.2010

your sample reviews made me laugh out loud!

that’s all.

:)

Sleepy4 on 5.17.2010

Love this. It means when it says 6 reviews , they will be actual reviews and not comments. Love!! Now if I could just figure out how to delete a recipe that I no longer need that is in my community recipe box. Does anyone know?

I know you have to do this but Im bummed because my Authentic Corned Beef and Cabbage has 5 mits with 11 ACTUAL reviews and not one bad one in the bunch. :( Back to square one I guess…

Great idea – love the changes! I have tried to leave a few reviews this evening and they are all disappearing, though.

Vicki (piggledy) on 5.17.2010

Perfect! Exactly what I would have done, were I you. I had intended to write you an e-mail about this, but since I have not yet submitted a recipe (I’ve tried a lot of them, does that count????), I figure I don’t have a leg to stand on. But, bravo! I know this was a tough decision to make, especially in regard to some of the older, established recipes with high ratings. Maybe you’ll need to have a contest which involves trying and rating a certain number of recipes, with appropriate reviews to show they were indeed tried. And, I promise, once I have my own blog up and running, I’ll submit some of my recipes here, as well!

Danielle on 5.17.2010

What a great idea!! I love love love your websites and so do my friends. Every recipe that I ever use that you post always turns out so great and wows everyone who eats them! You really make me look like I know what I’m doing. haha I also love your photography. I never really had anyone that I looked up to but now i do. You truly inspire me.

Grrr. I can’t post a review either. I clicked the ratings mitt and wrote my review but I keep getting “You must give both a rating and a review” or something like that. I signed out & back in and tried again, and it still gives me the same error.

Monie on 5.17.2010

I think this is wonderful and will enhance the ‘Tasty Kitchen’ experience for all. Will/would it be possible, to be able to search by the ‘mitts’? Say, you have an urgent need for the absolute, tried and true, five-star, perfect recipe…will we be able to search all recipes that have posted a five-mitt rating?….not that the other recipes would be less wonderful…but just not rated yet…?

Kelly in PA: The search function is NEXT! Yes, it’s very important and will be the next big change on the horizon.

Pati mk: I completely agree about the PW comments not belonging on TK…that’s in the works, too (it was more of a system feature, not something planned.) Shouldn’t be long before that’s outta there!

merideth on 5.17.2010

hey – yea! i don’t know where i’ve been all year since tasty kitchen started, but now i can feel like i’m in from the beginning! :)

Kelly in PA on 5.17.2010

I would like to request an upgrade to the search function. I use it occasionally and it returns a lot of things that don’t have anything to do with what I typed in. For example, I searched for “potato salad” and the second item on the list is “Italian Shredded Beef” and the fourth on the list is “apricot glazed pork shoulder”, fifth is “spring picnic pea salad”. None even contain potatoes as an ingredient.

The site would be much more usable if you could get the programmers to spif up the search!

Thanks! I love the recipes that I do eventually find. :)

pati mk on 5.17.2010

Good work. I was also wondering about my comments on PW showing up on Tasty Kitchen’s site too. I don’t think they belong on my profile on Tasty Kitchen. Thanks for all your hard work and great site.

Claire Pegg on 5.17.2010

Thank you so much for doing this! I have actually not been using the recipes, since I couldn’t find a real rating for so many of them other than, “Wow, this sounds good!” I now will have a tool to see which recipes I want to try first. Well done!!

Oops, correction to my previous comment…

The Done but with errors on page note is just in the browser status bar, not when hitting submit. When I hit submit the reminder to provide both a rating and a review in order to submit is highlighted.

And now I see that Ree is on the case. Pardon me while I tiptoe away from the keyboard!

This will be a little pain for a lot of gain!

I have only ever reviewed one recipe and I can’t seem to add a new review to it. I clicked on the review tab, clicked five mitts, pasted my review, and after clicking it submit it just says done with error on page. It’s drpepper’s Moistest Banana Bread Ever (and it really is!): https://tastykitchen.com/tasty-kitchen/recipes/breads/the-moistest-banana-breade280a6-ever/

Looking forward to the new change. It was getting very difficult to find a recipe that someone had actually tried. Can’t wait to use it once you’ve ironed out the glitch.

katie on 5.17.2010

yay! so happy to see this change.

beth aka confusedhomemaker on 5.17.2010

Awesome change! It will help connect what worked for the homecook trying the recipe & what might not have.

Darcy on 5.17.2010

This is a great change. I also think it would be nice to be able to print reviews when you print the recipe. There are often very good suggestions from reviewers and then if you print the recipe you lose that feedback/help.

I like these changes. Yay!

I noticed that on the recipes that I have looked at today there is a choice to edit the recipe (and they aren’t my recipes!). Is this supposed to be happening?

Profile photo of Daktari

Wow! Thanks so much! I found Tasty Kitchen’s site to be nearly impossible to use because of this one little thing. I’ll probably use it a LOT more with this change!

kriswithmany on 5.17.2010

It’ll take a while for the ratings to adjust again, but I think it will be a lot better for these changes! I too was frustrated with “this sounds great” reviews. I like to know that other people tried it, played with it, and had success!

KimS on 5.17.2010

Just an FYI but I was able to rate my own recipe (and not leave a review). I just accessed it through My Recipe Box and clicked the mitt rating. It has one rating now and no reviews written.

Thanks!

i’ll admit that i’ve been both:

guilty of this

AND

frustrated by viewing it

so this is a WIN for me–thanks!!!

p.s. hey, what can i say, some of these recipes by TK’ers are TOO irresistable, before even cooking!

Lisa N on 5.17.2010

Definitely a plus ++++. I really didn’t like it the way it was before. This will help me a lot more when looking for recipes to try! Thanks Ree!!

karen on 5.17.2010

this all makes perfect sense to me and will greatly improve the site. starting from scratch is difficult, but this site gets so much use by readers it will be no time before the ratings and reviews are back in place. good job Ree

I’m getting that error message too. I want to spread the love on the infamous Butter Chicken recipe, which I had commented on before. I’m getting the error that both a rating & review are needed, even though I’ve clicked on the mitts and wrote a review.

Appreciate your eye for details, Ree! This new system will certainly deliver the message we need for our recipes. Nice to see if someone has actually tried the recipe, tweaked it, or just thought it looked interesting! Thanks!

What a great improvement and you explained it perfectly! I always leave reviews for each and every recipe I try. It would be great to be able to find those reviews in my profile – eventually! Thanks for all the hard work!!

a chris on 5.17.2010

Excellent. The reviews/comments thing was really making it hard to find recipes people had tried and liked!

Also a great idea to keep a way for people to comment.

Great idea on the improvements!

A suggestion though, I noticed that some of my newer comments on The Pioneer Woman site show up on our profile here at Tasty Kitchen. Is there a way to either privatize/hide our comments, unlink them, or just turn them off/delete them completely from the profile page? It’s just my preference, but I’d rather not have a running list of my comments/activity on for the whole world to see on my profile after I post them. Thanks Ree :)
