Description

These cookies have a delicious butter flavor that just blows a plain old sugar cookie away! They’re perfect for decorating, too!

Ingredients

  • 1 pound Butter, Softened
  • 1-½ cup White Sugar
  • 4 whole Egg Yolks
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla
  • 4-½ cups Flour
  • ½ teaspoons Salt

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Cream together butter and sugar. Add egg yolks and vanilla and mix well. Beat in the flour and salt. Chill for 30 minutes in the refrigerator. Roll out dough between 1/4 and 1/2 inch and cut into shapes. Bake on ungreased cookie sheet for 10 minutes or until very lightly browned on the bottom. Keep a close eye on these, because they are not nearly as tasty when they get too brown.

I made these for my sons’ Christmas parties at preschool. Everyone raved about them. I love switching it up to use the Butter Cookie instead of the Sugar Cookie. I decorated them with the “Royal Icing for Sugar Cookies” recipe that I found here on Tasty Kitchen….yum!

This recipe made just over 160 1.5-inch cookies. Plan to be in your kitchen for a long time if you use a small cookie cutter! They were super-easy to make. Do watch them closely in the oven, and try to roll out the dough in small parts- when I first rolled out the entire batch it was too thick, so I started dividing it, storing the rest in the fridge until I was ready to use it. Because the recipe was so easy, I didn’t mind taking the time to cut, bake, cut, bake, etc. for a couple of hours. Now I have almost 200 pretty little cookies to decorate and give away for Christmas.

Great recipe!

oh YUMMMMMM! I am so excited to try these!! I love the look and fun of sugar cookies, but have never been a fan of the taste. Way too boring. But I am a HUGE fan of butter!

Don’t tell my mom, but I now use this butter cookie recipe instead of hers! It is perfect – such great flavor. I like them both with and without icing.

Wow. I’m a big believer that if you’re going to put a solid fat into anything, use BUTTER! I’ve been looking for a good “sugar cookie” recipe that did NOT use Crisco, and this is just perfect. I made one batch of these and one of my standby Alton Brown ones, and while I still love Alton’s, these are it. I love the less sweet but richer flavor and my friend helping me out was obsessing over how wonderful they were. These are perfect for icing and I will be making another 100 or so Christmas cookies out of these for a big cookie decorating activity I’m hosting next week! Thank you thank you for this recipe, and if you’re one the fence – make it!!

These cookies were great, perfect flavor– cookies weren’t too sweet so they went great with sweet royal icing.

This is now my go to recipe for holiday decorating cookies. I used to use a sugar cookie recipe, but now I am hooked on the Butter Cookie! Too good!!!
