Tasty Kitchen Blog: Game Day Grub!

Someone told me about a big game going down this weekend. For some, it’s THE biggest game of the year. There are folks who are so hip to the game that they know everything from the point spread to the MVP odds. Some simply watch it for the commercials. Maybe this year, a few will tune in just to see if The Who can still rock it. And few may be wondering what the big deal is about a giant dish that holds soup.

Whatever group you belong to, chances are, you’ll be around a bunch of other people this Super Bowl Sunday, whether it’s at your home or someone else’s home. There’ll be friends, family, loud conversations, and food. Lots of food. Mostly the kind that you can hold in your hand while jumping up from the couch either giving everyone high fives or trying very hard not to throw things at the television.

It’s been known to happen.

If that sounds like your upcoming weekend, we’ve got you covered! There are lots of game day choices here, from dips cold and warm, to all kinds of pizzas, finger foods, different versions of chili … and many of them require minimal preparation, so you can actually enjoy the game with everyone instead of being stuck in the kitchen where the smallest television in the house sits.

For starters, here’s a virtual staple for any football party: Salsa, Baby! TK member Stefanie’s recipe is fresh, simple, and is a cinch to throw together.

If warm dips are more your thing, how about this beauty from whiteonricecouple? Their Baked Sweet Onion Dip only needs about 20 minutes of prep time, and then it goes into the oven for a mere 30 to 45 minutes. (And no, there are no game day favorites being implied here with that horseshoe in the photo.)

You could also make cookingdunkinstyle’s wonderful spin on queso below. Her Chery’s Kicked Up Queso is just the thing to keep everyone dipping all day. Make sure you stock up on chips!

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Game Day Grub! (Cheryl’s Kicked Up Queso from TK member cookingdunkinstyle)

And take a look at these Sausage Stuffed Mushrooms from Mariel Emory. These little bites look so good that they may never make it past the kitchen.

If your worried about feeding a group of famished carnivores, we have just the thing for you. Here’s a Slow Cooker Pulled Pork from one of our other favorite guys around here, Cooking Ventures. It’ll make awesome sandwiches that will keep everyone happy, and maybe even some wraps for the ladies.

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Game Day Grub! (Slow Cooker Pulled Pork from TK member Cooking Ventures)

Make extra, so you can make some “brain-dead easy” Pulled Pork Pockets from our resident grilling pro, PatioDaddio.

Tasty Kitchen Blog: Game Day Grub! (Pulled Pork Pockets, recipe submitted by TK member John Dawson of Patio Daddio BBQ)

So, do you have big plans for this Sunday’s big game? Are you going all out with your spread, or are you just planning on a big batch of your favorite chili and calling it a day? (If so, we have some Baked Hushpuppies from beachbumwannabe that’ll be a wonderful complement to your chili.) Or maybe pizza’s your thing, the kind that only needs a phone and some fast-dialing fingers.

Whatever it is you’re planning, here’s hoping your Sunday is filled with wonderful food, good friends, and screen-protected televisions. I hear they can repel BBQ sauce-coated projectiles.

We’re just looking out for you.

Ree-
I just had to let you know that I was unfortunately ill the day of the Super Bowl. My boyfriend and I had picked out your potatoe skins chili and brownie recipes and had previously gone to the store and bought the ingredients together. (He’s the type that likes to go to the store because he can pick what he wants and knows he doesn’t have to cook it.) Anyways, I was literally too sick to cook on sunday so it was all up to him. I woke up once and went out to the kitchen and not only was making everything, but he was making most of it at the same time! I have never seen a man more determined to cook himself “game day” food as this guy! I remember him saying “Why don’t all cookbooks have step by step pictures like this one?” I have to give you my personal congrats and say thank you for making a cookbook that is not only my favorite cookbook, but is also “man-friendly.” THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!

A comment on the comment section:

I like the comments too, it is what makes this a community.

I’ve asked questions about a recipe and got a reply.

Food Network is probably all over this site seeing how sucessful it is and stuff.

Good job Ree! Everything you touch turns to gold. You must have an IQ of 150+!

MMMM The stuffed mushrooms and queso are on my grocery list for tonight… and tomorrow’s menu! :)

Those look fantastic. Definitely shouldn’t be looking at TKB with an empty stomach and making a grocery list.. It’s going to be damaging!

GEAUX, SAINTS!!
Chicken & Andouille sausage gumbo, potato salad, and peach cobbler here on Game Day. We’re having a crowd of folks over for food and football. I can’t wait!

Margo/MSbHospitality on 2.4.2010

Welllllllll…bein’ a true Southern Girl from the Mississippi Gulf Coast and going to New Orleans so often, I must say that for this game I’m making red beans and rice to honor the Saints! A true New Orleans recipe and I’ll try to photo them and post the recipe! Go Saints! It’s about time!!!!
And I am making the Onion Dip… OMGoodness… it looks so good!

Lorie on 2.4.2010

And why do I read these posts at work when all I want to do is go home and try making some of them…?

Why do I insist on reading these posts pre-breakfast…

Evelyn on 2.3.2010

It all looks sooooo good. But the pulled pork and the onion dip would probably be my favorites…gotta try both…maybe I can convince my football fanatic son-in-law to make it on Sunday.

Love the collage….and game day food focus. Great idea!!

Deb Dennis on 2.3.2010

My oldest daughter is basically a vegetarian (I convinced her fish have no feelings, so for now I can get her to eat seafood)

She loves mushrooms, and cream cheese, so I made a batch of the stuffed mushrooms using crab delights instead of the sausage… they were yummy!! I made the sausage for the rest of us, and we couldn’t figure out which one we liked better!

Kay Carrasco on 2.3.2010

For the record…. I *love* the comment section! I think it’s very important in creating the warm, sharing community that this site is. I also like to have a way to ask questions of the original cook, and find it interesting to see others’ suggestions for substitutions or modifications. That being said, I totally like the idea of being able to differentiate between a comment-post and a review-post–that’d be awesome!

Erin, those are patiodaddio’s Pulled Pork Pockets mentioned near the end of the post. They really are as “brain-dead easy” as he says!

Erin on 2.3.2010

Erika, what’s the recipe for the pic on the top right? Looks yummy… an empanada or something similar?

Thanks!

Ree | The Pioneer Woman on 2.3.2010

Susan, we totally agree and are working on a change to the system that would differentiate between “Reviews”, where people who have actually cooked the recipe can give feedback, and “Comments” where people give feedback to the recipe in general (that it looks good, that they’ve been looking for a recipe like that one, etc.) Both kinds of comments are welcome, but it will be very important to be able to distinguish between the two.

This is one of those development items that we just haven’t ironed out yet…but I assure you, it’s at the top of the priority list!

Kelly @ Evil Shenanigans on 2.3.2010

I’m going to be in NYC for a special event with the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund and Electrolux, so no game day spread for me … not that I am sad! I am going to help raise money for a great cause!

Amy @ Cheerful Cookery on 2.3.2010

I thought I had my Superbowl menu locked down, but baked sweet onion dip may make me change my mind!

katie on 2.3.2010

i am making a ton of your bacon wrapped jalapeno poppers! those things are so addictive.

Susan on 2.3.2010

I noticed on the Pulled Pork recipe that there were 4 reviews. I went to read them to find out how the recipe went for others. None of the “reviews” are reviews at all. They are all comments from people who think the recipe looks good, but none of them have tried it yet. This kind of review system isn’t going to work.

Dani on 2.3.2010

You just took care of my menu…Thank you! All will be loved by all who are coming to our Super Bowl Party….:-)

I am not a football fan, sorry to say, but I do like having people over so I can cook for them. Hanging out in the kitchen and whipping up some yummy treats for my guest is my favorite part of the game and maybe the advertisments.

These recipes look so good!

I think several of these will be attending our party this weekend. However, the #1 thing that must be on the list (or I will be strung up by my ears) are the PW Jalepeno Popper Thingies. They are so addicting!
