Description

This was the cookie my brother requested most often. I have no idea what they’re really called, because my brother called them “Spreads”, referring to the fact that cookie dough is “spread” onto a baking sheet AND that melted chocolate chips are “spread” onto the baked cookie at the end of the process. They’re basically a chocolate chip cookie, but upside down … or inside out. Or something.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • 1 cup Softened Butter
  • 1 whole Egg
  • 2 cups Flour
  • ½ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 8 ounces, weight ( To 8 Ounces) Chocolate Chips

Preparation

*Note: Changed this from margarine to butter through the years!

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together brown sugar and butter. Add egg and mix together. Add flour, salt, and vanilla, and mix together well.

Spread dough onto cookie sheet to a thickness of 1/4 to 1/2-inch.

Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, or until slightly brown. At this point, pull out of the oven and sprinkle chocolate chips evenly over the top. Return to oven for 1 minute. Remove and spread melted chips over the top. Cut into squares.

I don’t know what it is about this recipe, but these are great! I made a batch up as a thank you gift for some friends, and they are lucky that most of the squares made it to them!!! Melting the chocolate chips for frosting is genius. It is a fun change from doing “regular” chocolate chip cookies but with the same flavor!

I agree, these are great! I was reminded of shortbread as well. Loved ‘em.

What a simple and delicious treat! I substituted butter for margarine (it’s all I had on hand), and the dough came out so buttery and tender.

I was nervous because the two previous reviewers had a bad experience, but let me assure you that this recipe is a winner. The dough was a little sticky/loose, and I struggled a bit spreading it on my parchment paper, but I used my hands and got the top fairly even. Despite the somewhat lumpy dough, my cookies still turned out just right.

I’m so sorry to say but I did not like these. They were really dry. I really wanted to like them though!

Sadly I didn’t like these cookies. I wanted to, but perhaps if I felt nostalgic about them I would have liked them better.

These have become some of my favorite cookies! The buttery cookie is almost like a shortbread and is perfectly complemented by the melty chocolate chips. (I’ve even been known to sprinkle some toasted pecans on top!) So easy yet different from your run-of-the mill chocolate chip cookie. I took a batch to work the other day, and they were devoured within a few hours!
