Description

These burgers are high in protein, more so than a classic meat burger. They are made with whole grain quinoa and black beans and flavored with hickory liquid smoke and BBQ sauce. A vegan burger recipe that you won’t be able to live without.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups Water
  • 1 cup Quinoa
  • ¾ cups Uncooked Whole Wheat Macaroni
  • 1 can (540ml Size) Black Beans, Drained And Rinsed
  • ⅔ cups Hickory BBQ Sauce (I Used Bulls-Eye)
  • 2-¼ teaspoons Hickory Liquid Smoke
  • 1 clove Garlic, Minced
  • 1 cup Whole Wheat Bread Crumbs
  • 3 Tablespoons Canola Oil, For Frying
  • 8  Whole Wheat Buns, To Serve

Preparation

Bring the 2 cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan. Add the quinoa, stir, reduce heat to low, cover and simmer 20 minutes. At the same time, bring a separate pot of water to boil and add the macaroni. Boil the macaroni 18-20 minutes until soft and a little overdone. Both the macaroni and the quinoa should be done cooking at about the same time. Once the quinoa has cooked, remove it from the heat and set it aside. Drain the macaroni and place it in a food processor. Process until smooth and no noodles remain intact. Add the black beans, BBQ sauce, liquid smoke and garlic and process again until combined and smooth. Pour the quinoa into a large mixing bowl. Add the macaroni/bean mixture and the bread crumbs and mix until combined.

Heat a skillet with a few tablespoons of canola oil on medium-high heat. Fry each burger 3-5 minutes on each side, until the outside is browned and crispy. Serve on a whole wheat bun with your favorite toppings. Store any remaining burger mixture in the fridge. Keeps for 3-5 days.

Fantastic! I’m slowly converting my family to a vegan lifestyle and am looking for recipes where things taste similar so they don’t all freak out over too much change. Anyhow, nobody (except my husband) knew these were meatless until I told them. I left out the liquid smoke and I added some mesquite seasoning salt. These are our new burgers. Thanks!

These we awesome! I added a bit of cumin and paprika to mine for some more smokey-ness, but other than that I followed the recipe. Thanks for the great recipe!

I have never had a black bean burger, but these were absolutely delicious! I served them with a side of sauteed beets. When I ate them, I thought a good variation might be off the bun and in a tamale pie. I will make these again, they were great! Thanks for sharing!
