Funny thing about growing up in Quebec and now living in Indiana: translations. Here’s an example. Shepherd’s Pie in French Quebec is called Pate Chinois. Translation please: Chinese Pate! No, really! How confusing is that? Could someone please explain to me how an Irish/English dish named Shepherd’s Pie (named accurately) is then translated to Chinese Pate? Confused yet?
Preheat oven to 350ºF.
First heat the olive oil in a pan, then add your chopped onions. Cook until soft and lightly brown. Add your ground beef; break up the large pieces and saute until meat is cooked. Add your mushrooms and cook for another 3-4 minutes. (I do not like my mushrooms mushy; if you do, then go ahead and cook them until so.) Sprinkle your gravy mix over your meat mixture and mix well. Let this cook for no more than 1 minute then add your wine and broth (or water). Salt and pepper to taste. Let this simmer for a few minutes until it thickens.
Transfer your meat to a casserole dish (3-quart dish). Sprinkle your peas evenly over the meat. Spoon your mashed potatoes over and gently spread to cover everything. Season with fresh ground pepper and finish with your Parmesan cheese. Bake for 20-30 minutes until heated through and lightly browned.

Sounds delish!! I grew up eating it with green beans in place of peas!!! Love it!! So excited to have somewhere to find tweaked recipes of the same dish!

This is one of my all time favourite comfort foods. FWIW
Shepard’s pie is made with ground lamb…Cottage Pie is made with ground beef! That is what my Scottish and English Grannies told me anyway.

I love Pate Chinois!! And I happen to know the answer behind the translation! I live in Maine. It is actually the French-Canadian name for China Pie. Not Chinese Named after a small town here is Maine called China. It was a staple food for Canadian loggers living near China, Maine during the logging season. It is filled with good starches and protien to keep them filled and logging all day. The Maine version has creamed-corn in between the meat and potato layer. So good! Hope this answers your question!
