A recipe from my aunt for a Pennsylvanian treat. It’s like a whoopie pie with filling that tastes like whipped cream.
To make the cake part of the gobs, cream together the shortening and sugar. Add in milk, then slowly add each consecutive item until all items are mixed. Pipe about 1-tablespoon-sized circles onto parchment paper and bake at 350 degrees for about 8 minutes (or until done).
For the filling, mix cake flour and milk on the stove on medium heat, stirring constantly until thick and boiling. Remove from heat and allow to cool to lukewarm. In the mixer, cream sugar and shortening until fluffy. Beat in the lukewarm custard. Add vanilla and beat at high speed until very fluffy and light. You will see a noticeable difference in the consistency. Pipe between two gobs and enjoy!
