Description

Sweet, simple cookies that hold their cut-out shapes perfectly. The ideal cookie for icing and sprinkles and holiday joy. Get the whole family together and have a cookie-decorating party!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Butter Or Margarine, Softened
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 2 whole Eggs
  • 1-½ teaspoon Vanilla Extract
  • 3 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • ½ teaspoons Baking Soda
  • Canned Decorator Icing
  • Sprinkles

Preparation

Note: for pictures and the story of my wonderful mother-in-law’s cookie recipe, check out the related link.

Mix softened butter, sugar, eggs, and vanilla until the mixture is smooth(ish).

Add flour, salt, and baking soda. Mix until the dough is quasi-firm and slightly crumbly.

Roll dough into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap (or place in a lidded container) and refrigerate for at least 4 hours. Overnight works best.

Break refrigerated dough into manageable chunks, roll out to about 1/8-inch thick. Press cookie cutters in, lift out the cut-out shape, and lay on a baking sheet. I recommend lining the sheet with parchment paper—no scrubbing afterwards!

Bake at 400 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Allow to cool before decorating.

Once cooled, whip out your super-fancy canned decorator icing (preferably the kind with inter-changeable tips) and decorate your cookies to your heart’s content.

Enjoy!

I don’t know if I did something wrong, but my dough was really sticky. I had to add lots of flour to be able to get the dough to be manageable, so we could roll it out and get the cookies to the baking sheet. The cookies did taste pretty good in the end, though.
