Description

After a fierce family sugar cookie competition, Aunt Karen’s were the clear winner. In a family of bakers, that is saying something. Their flavor is bright and delicious and their texture is perfect.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Sour Cream
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
  • 1 cup Butter
  • 2 cups Sugar
  • 2 whole Eggs
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon Lemon Extract
  • ½ teaspoons Finely Grated Lemon Peel
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Powder
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Nutmeg
  • 5 cups Flour (up To 5 1/2 Cups, Just Enough So Dough Is Not Too Sticky To Work)
  • _____
  • FOR THE FROSTING (optional):
  • ⅔ cups Softened Butter
  • 6 cups Powdered Sugar
  • 3 teaspoons Vanilla
  • 4 Tablespoons To 6 Tablespoons Milk, Depending On Desired Consistency

Preparation

Combine sour cream and baking soda and set aside. Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, vanilla, lemon extract and lemon peel. Sift together salt, baking powder, nutmeg, and flour and add to the creamed mixture alternately with sour cream mixture. Mix after each addition. Chill. Roll out and cut. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes.

Can be frosted or decorated any way that tickles your fancy. But for a simple butter frosting, mix together the frosting ingredients above until smooth. Add coloring if desired. My favorite is to add cream cheese to the frosting.
