Torrijas is world-famous Spanish style French toast that’s traditionally eaten at Easter! Try this easy to cook and moist bread pudding!
1. In a medium size pot add 1 quart of milk, 2 cinnamon sticks, 1 lemon peel, and 5 ounces of sugar.
2. Bring it to a slow boil. Stir to dissolve the sugar.
3. When starting to boil, turn off the heat and set the pot aside. Remove the lemon peel and the cinnamon sticks.
4. Slice the stale French bread into slices that are 1/2 – 1 inch thick (approximately_.
5. Arrange the French bread slices in a shallow baking dish or on plates.
6. Pour 1 or 2 tablespoons of the milk mixture onto each bread slice side. Try to get them to absorb as much milk as they can without breaking apart.
7. Let the French bread slices soak for 15 – 20 minutes.
8. Beat the eggs in a bowl and then mix in the 1 cup of vegetable oil.
9. Heat a skillet over medium high heat. Dip the bread slices into the beaten eggs.
10. Fry the bread slices over medium heat for 2 minutes on each side or until golden. Set Torrijas on paper towels to drain the excess oil.
11. In a mortar mix 2 tablespoons of sugar and 1/2 tablespoon of cinnamon and grind for 1 – 2 minutes.
12. Sprinkle the mix on the top of the Torrijas and let them cool for 20 minutes.
13. Serve and enjoy your Spanish style French toast recipe!
