Description

I have been wanting to make this for a decade but was a little intimidated. Turns out it was really easy. My kids and I call this dish “brains wrapped in skin with blood sauce”. Yum Yum!

Ingredients

  • 1 head Green Cabbage
  • 1 pound Lean Ground Beef
  • 1 cup Cooked White Rice
  • 1 whole Egg, Beaten
  • ¼ cups Milk
  • ¼ cups Onion, Minced
  • ½ teaspoons Garlic Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Salt
  • ¾ teaspoons White Pepper
  • 1 can (28 Oz. Size) Crushed Tomatoes
  • 1 can Petite Diced Tomatoes, 28 Ounce Can
  • 4 Tablespoons Brown Sugar
  • 3 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
  • 3 teaspoons Worcestershire Sauce

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

Core the head of cabbage. Place it in a microwave safe bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and microwave for 3 to 6 minutes so the leaves are soft.

In a bowl mix together ground beef, cooked rice, beaten egg, milk, onion, garlic salt, salt, and white pepper. Place 1/4 cup of the meat mixture in center of cabbage leaf and roll up, tucking in the ends. Place rolls seam side down in a 9×13 pan. You should have between 12 and 15. When the leaves start to get small I will use two leaves at a time.

In another bowl mix the remaining ingredients and pour as much as you can over the rolls and filling up the pan. This will produce a lot of sauce. That’s how we like it.

Bake for one hour.

I made this over the weekend. My husband & I loved it! I had to microwave the cabbage 6 minutes to get enough soft leaves. Then I wish I had baked it with foil cuz some of the tops dried out. But, the sauce is to die for! Absolutely a keeper!

I was discouraged by other stuffed cabbage recipes because they wanted me to boil the head of cabbage and then blanch the leaves. I chose this recipe because it stated to put the whole head of cabbage in the microwave and then steam…which was so much easier. I decided to brown the meat and onion first, and then I combined all of the ingredients. Also, I didn’t have any brown sugar so i just added a lot of garlic instead. This recipe was easy and pretty darn good. My husband said that he liked the simplicity of it and he also liked the fact that he could taste every component of the dish…nothing was too overpowering. I will definitely add this to my rolodex!
