Tasty Kitchen Blog: Candy Cane Treats. Photo and recipe from TK member Angie Arthur.

It’s been a long time coming! Since launching Tasty Kitchen last summer, I’ve been working on getting the Tasty Kitchen blog up and running, so I can communicate with users more easily, highlight delicious recipes, and—the best part—feature the awesomely creative Tasty Kitchen members.

Members like Angie Arthur, who created the delicious Candy Cane Treats you see above. Give these yummy babies a try! Thanks, Angie, for the sharing this sweet treat!

I’m looking for recipes for all the little treats that creative folks put in Christmas treat baskets: cookies, candies, brownies, etc. Feel free to leave an idea (or link) in the Comments. There are some incredible goody recipes here on Tasty Kitchen!

Can’t wait to touch base with you more and more. I’ve been dying to brag on you guys.

Love,
Ree

Well, I already bought myself a KitchenAid stand mixer. So now my #1 wanted item is a food processor and I want a Cuisinart!

Cynthia Kemp-Reynolds on 12.19.2009

Kitchenaid mixer! Or a Viking Mixer… or a new kitchen from the Viking store…. I’ll take any of the above!

I love to pamper family with homemade fudge, peanut brittle and cookies.

A candy thermometer – I have ruined too many carmel sauces over the last few months. :(

I’d love a new knife.

I found a jar of marshmellow cream while moving. Must be at least 20 years old. Safe to use?

Does anyone have a cookie recipe similar to the soft ‘pink frosting’ cookie? It is my granddaughter’s FAVORITE cookie and I thought it would be fun to make them for Christmas. I have improvised a few sugar cookie recipes, adding cream cheese and powdered sugar (replacing half of the granulated sugar) and have come close, but would like to see if anyone else has perfected it!

Thanks

Thanks for this blog…it’ll be fun reading all of these posts every day and learning a bunch of new recipes to boot. Read Ree’s love story last night and loved it….what a wonderful read. So sweet, romantic and heart rendering. Maybe I need to move to Texas to find myself a nice, romantic cowboy.

Angel,
Here’s the link to my Gumbo. It’s served with white rice. Good luck on your luncheon.

Angel, The first thought I have is good ole chicken noodle. There are many variations, but basically it’s chicken, onion, celery, parsley, pinch of garlic, maybe some carrots and noodles. You can keep it in a crock pot for hours and the only thing that happens is that sometimes the noodles get fatter and more tasty from the soup. Look through Tasty Kitchen… I’m sure I’ve seen some chicken noodle soup recipes… if you don’t see one… message me and I’ll send you my recipe… Super simple
My chicken and oyster gumbo makes a good basic soup and if you go oogie about the oysters, just leave them out and serve chicken gumbo. Chicken and Oyster Gumbo is in Tasty Kitchen under hearty soups and stews.

Hey guys,
I’m desperate for a good soup or stew recipe to feed at a luncheon. I’ll have to keep it in a crockpot, not sure if that matters. Please help!

Hey Ree – thanks for adding this to your already incredible online presence – it’s wonderful!

I don’t have any tips for Christmas snackies, but I do have a request. One of my favorite online recipe sites (shall go unnamed here – but I can direct you to it if you need to see what I’m talking about) does nutritional charts for all of the recipes added.

As the mum of a Type 1 Diabetic it is incredibly helpful to know what the carb count on recipes is – he’s allowed to eat sugar and carbs, we just need to know how to treat it, and so recipes that have that included are ultra helpful.

Thanks again for all you do!

Anne on 12.10.2009

Not so long ago I prided myself on not cooking. To much work for this working gal. Been reading Confessions now for 3 years and moved on to reading ALL the blogs. Now thanks to Ree I’m spending my weekends cooking and baking. So much so I even bought a lovely red Kitchenaid mixer on Monday to further my endeavors.

Now I’m thinking I need a cookie press LOL after seeing some of the cookie recipes.

Bought PW’s cookbook the day it came out but I was to far away for a chance to meet her in person. But a lovely St Louis friend sent me one of her t’s and it’s so danged pretty (and so my style/colors) I’m tempted to have it framed :)

Enjoying Tasty Kitchen and all the contributions!

My daughter and I have a tradition of making monkey bread every year. We use the small individual loaf pans — and the best part is that she does all the work! We wrap them up and she gives them to teachers, cousins, etc. It really does make it a gift from her.

This year, we are adding a couple of Ree’s cookie recipes into the mix.

It was great to meet you in Dallas, Ree! Made the Chicken Pot Pie tonight and it was amazing!

Andrea on 12.9.2009

Kudos to my sis for being featured. Wish cooking skills ran in the family. :)

I’ve been making these….
This recipe comes thru Elle’s New England Kitchen from Domino Sugar. I made a 1/2 batch the other day and they are VERY easy to do. In the batch I made I did not put the apple pie spice – I just left them plain. I also used walnuts instead of the pecans. I also added 2 drops of green food coloring to the egg whites to add a light color to the coating.

Sugared Pecans

A list of ingredients you will need:

1/2 cup – butter or margarine, melted

2 – egg whites

1/2 teaspoon – salt

1 cup – Domino® Granulated Sugar

1 1/2 teaspoons – apple pie spice

1 pound – pecan halves (about 4 cups)

Instructions »

Preheat oven to 325°F. Pour butter into a 15 1/2×10 1/2×1-inch jelly roll pan.

In large bowl, beat egg whites and salt until foamy. Gradually add sugar and apple pie spice, beating just until blended Add pecans and stir to coat.

Spread pecans in a single layer in prepared pan. Bake about 30 minutes or until pecans are crisp and butter is absorbed, turning pecans over with a metal spatula every 10 minutes. Cool pecans on baking sheet until crisp, about 2 hours. Store tightly covered.

Makes about 4 cups.

Try the peanut butter popcorn under appetizers/snacks. My sister gave me the recipe. Easy to make-you have all the ingredients, too! It’s something different than caramel corn; people really love it! Put it in a cellophane sack, put a ribbon on it and go! Or, fill a really cute tin and give to the neighbors. Great!

(Someone may have mentioned this already…but in case no one did)

A suggestion:
The images don’t show up if you are using an external feed reader (like google reader). I’m guessing it has to do with the RSS feed. Can it be modified to pass the images too? Pretty please?
I love the images! I totally rely on the images to decide if I want to try something or not! :-)

Thanks!

This will be fun! Even though I’m ashamed to admit I haven’t submitted one dadgum recipe to TK yet. I’ve been too busy trying yours out! :)

Robin ~ PENSIEVE on 12.9.2009

Looks like you’ve got lots of suggestions, but this one is fun, easy and a great inter-generational activity; I’ve had the best times doing this with my mother-in-law and daughter :).

Noni’s Homemade Buttermints http://bit.ly/7ThjsG

(Funny, but they don’t use real butter, it doesn’t work. Every time I make these and give them away, people are stunned that I did this! It’s so simple I’m ashamed to admit how easy it is).
