Description

A recipe for molasses kringles that was passed down to me from my grandmother.

Ingredients

  • ¾ cups Shortening (I Substituted Unsalted Butter)
  • 1 cup Brown Sugar
  • ¼ cups Molasses
  • 1 whole Egg
  • 2-¼ cups Flour
  • 2 teaspoons Baking Soda
  • ⅛ teaspoons Salt
  • 1 teaspoon Cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon Ginger
  • ½ teaspoons Cloves
  • ¼ cups White Sugar For Dipping
  • ½ cups Powdered Sugar
  • 1 teaspoon Vanilla
  • 1 Tablespoon Milk

Preparation

First up, cream together your shortening/butter and brown sugar. Next, add in the molasses, egg, flour, baking soda, salt, and spices. Mix it up good.

Take a small bowl and add the white sugar to it. Grab your dough by heaping teaspoonfuls and roll into a ball. Roll your ball in the white sugar, set it on your cookie sheet and smoosh it down with a fork. Repeat with the rest of the dough.

Pop your cookies in the oven at 350F for 9 to 11 minutes. While your cookies are cooling, whisk together the powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Spoon the glaze over each cookie and allow it to harden.

So – I must have printed-out the recipe prior to your correction…. I added the flour, started mixing and thought “is this right???” So – I rechecked this website and sure enough the correction had been made! I had to scrounge around my kitchen to basically “double” the recipe (not quite enough butter, so added some canola oil; not quite enough brown sugar, so I added some white sugar). I hope they turn out as wonderful as they smell!!

So sorry for the confusion with the flour measurement! It looks correct now. It should be 21/4 cups of flour. Thanks for all the nice comments!

I did not look at the related blog post before I made these cookies…guess I should have. I can understand the 1/4 cup measured 5 times…but why not just say
1 1/4 cups of flour? This misunderstanding would certainly account for the crumbly dough! I added 3/4 cup canola oil just to rescue the cookie recipe and not have to throw it all away. The family ate them…”great flavor…odd texture” Thank you for your comments. I would like to try these again…certainly with the related blog recipe.

Started my christmas baking today with this recipe….OH MY!!These are the BESTEST cookies I have EVER made with molasses! This is a keeper! I love the icing to go with it. I made the cookies using the shortening. I hope all my other new cookie recipes for christmas I am trying will be just as good as these! WOW! Thanks!
