Pour this yummy syrup over waffles, pancakes, and French toast to make them oh. so. much. better!
In a LARGE pot, combine butter, sugar, buttermilk, and Karo syrup, and bring to a boil for about 2 to 3 minutes. Add baking soda and vanilla. Mixture will fizz to TWICE THE SIZE or more, so make sure you use a good-sized pot! Set it aside to thicken while stirring occasionally. Pour over waffles, pancakes, and French toast to make them oh. so. much. better!

Hi Liza! My family LOVES this syrup. When I saw it first time, on PW’s blog, you suggested serving it over something… some sort of fried donut. Where can I find that recipe? It was such a hit, that I would like to make it again.
Thanks!

I made this and the baking soda taste was just too strong….I’ll make this again and cut the baking soda way down. I always do something for the kids, so next time I’m going to color it —purple or green.

I made this recipe this morning for waffles and it was delicious. There was some left and the taste is great cold. I think this would be wonderful as an ice cream topper. Thanks for sharing!

I have a quick question please. Do you know why you have to add the baking soda? It’s just my husband is really picky and he could still taste it after it was all cooled down and then reheated (next day) so of course wouldn’t eat it. Is it for thickening? If so I wonder if you could use corn starch instead?

How long does this keep? And where is the best place to store it?
