This soup smells wonderful and tastes even better. Not your ordinary tomato soup.
Saute onions in butter. Add tomatoes, then bay leaf, sugar, and spices. Simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally. Remove bay leaf and cloves. Puree in blender (or use a hand blender for less mess). Pour soup through a strainer, tapping strainer on the side of the pan to let more liquid through. (Discard pulp in strainer.) Add cream and milk and heat through.
Add croutons and fresh chives to each serving.

This soup was amazing! I got a new chinois for Christmas and decided to try this recipe out as I was dying to try a bisque with it. It exceeded my expectations – creamy and savory but with a hint of clove and sweetness from the brown sugar. Ate it with grilled cheese sandwiches for a warm, comforting dinner.
