I’ve been making stew using this same recipe for 17 years. It’s comfort in a bowl.
(Amounts of vegetables is an estimate. Please add whatever amount of carrots and potatoes pleases you!)
Brown meat in oil in a heavy pot. Add 2 1/2 cups hot water and the next 9 ingredients (the spices and seasonings). Cover and simmer for 1 1/2 hours. Add carrots and potatoes; cover and cook for an additional 35 to 45 minutes, until vegetables are tender. Thicken with a flour and water mixture. Serve with warm, crusty bread.

This was absolutely delicious!! I made it just as the recipe instructed but I found that I ran out of water after just an hour of simmering (and I had the flame on very low) so I added more then added more water when I added the veggies. I’d say it was an extra 2 cups of water. I also threw in some celery. It was the nicest stew ever – the meat just fell apart and the potatoes were full of the flavour. Oh mmmm! Thanks for posting! I’ll definitely keep this recipe close to hand!

I’m a real sucker for trying new beef stew recipes (my husband LOVES beef stew). This was fabulous… and the coffee tip made it extra rich… we all loved it!
