Description

A delicious German side dish. Comfort food at its best. German red cabbage is the perfect combination of sweet, sour, and savory!

Ingredients

  • 2 Tablespoons Butter
  • 1  Large Sweet Onion, Chopped (about 2½ Cups)
  • 1 head Red Cabbage, Shredded (8 To 10 Cups)
  • 2  Large Fuji Apples, Chopped
  • ⅓ cups Sugar
  • ⅓ cups Apple Cider Vinegar
  • ½ teaspoons Ground Cloves
  • 1 leaf Bay Or Laurel
  • ½ teaspoons Ground White Pepper
  • Salt
  • 3 Tablespoons Water

Preparation

Melt butter in a large Dutch oven over medium low heat. Add onion and sauté it just until aromatic.

Add shredded cabbage and apples. Stir in sugar, vinegar, ground cloves, bay leaf, white pepper, and sprinkle some salt. Stir everything well to distribute the flavors. Add water to help with the stewing process.

Cover and stew for about 1 to 1½ hours over medium low heat, stirring every 15 minutes. Cook until cabbage is very tender, and apple is virtually dissolved. Remove from heat and serve hot.
