Description

My son and his wife recently had a baby —yes, I’m a grandma (DeDe is preferred)—and I made a big batch of these for the weary parents. As the title implies, they are sweet and savory too, and you can alternate different kinds of beans. Plus, it’s made in a crock pot, so you just assemble and forget about it!

Ingredients

  • 1-½ pound Ground Chuck Or Turkey
  • 1 cup Chopped Onion
  • 2 cans (15 Oz. Can) Kidney Beans (light And Dark)
  • 2 cans (16 Oz. Can) Pork And Beans
  • 1 can (15 Oz. Can) Black Beans
  • 1 can (15 Oz. Can) Pinto Beans
  • 1 can (15 Oz. Can) Great Northern Beans
  • 1 can (15 Oz. Can) Navy Beans
  • ⅔ cups Brown Sugar
  • 1 Tablespoon Vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon Dry Mustard (sometimes, If I Don't Have Dry Mustard, I Use About A Tablespoon Of Wet)

Preparation

Brown the chuck or turkey with the onions and drain. Dump all into a crock pot and stir. I sometimes cook mine all day but six hours should do it. These reheat well, too.

Sometimes I drain the beans, sometimes I don’t and I’ve never rinsed them. I’ve been doing this by memory for so long that I forgot that the recipe I had written down in my recipe book called for water. I’ve never put water in it. I use the low setting, which is what I would for anything that I cook for 6 hours. And sorry about not mentioning a large crock pot! You can see by the picture that it is filled to the brim. Yum. Hope you all like it!

USE A LARGE CROCK POT!!! I’m making this as a side dish for dinner, and I have the main course in my large crock pot. I thought I could put this in my smaller crock pot, but no go! And that was with draining most of the liquid off the beans, although I’m not sure if I should have or not. But I really didn’t have room in the dish with the liquid I drained off. I’ve ended up putting it in a stoneware dish in the oven instead. (Once I try it, I’ll leave a review.)

Do you drain/rinse the beans before adding them to the crockpot??

What setting do you use on the crock pot?

These had a great taste to them! They turned out just a bit dry, which is the only reason I gave it 4 mitts instead of 5, but I’m not sure if it’s because I had them in a stoneware dish in the oven (see my comment :/ ) or if it was because I’d drained most of the water off the beans, not knowing at the time whether I should have or not. I will definitely try them again – the taste was really good – but I’ll probably try leaving the liquid in the beans and using my large crock pot!
