This lentil dish is warm and comforting, but also quite healthy. It can also be made vegan very easily.
Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Sauté onion in oil until translucent. Add cumin seeds, cardamom or curry powder and garlic. Stir and continue to heat for 2 minutes. Add broth, tomatoes, lentils, ginger, jalapeno pepper, turmeric and salt. Bring to a boil. Cover, reduce heat and simmer 15 minutes.
