Description

I was making sugar skulls for a friend and had leftover sugar mixture. I experimented and came up with these. I suppose you could add them to things like hot tea as a substitute for a sugar cube but I just pop them in my mouth like candy. They have been a big favorite for years as a treat for holidays.

Ingredients

  • 1 whole Egg White
  • ½ teaspoons Cream Of Tartar
  • ½ teaspoons Corn Syrup
  • ½ teaspoons Vanilla
  • 3 cups Sugar
  • ½ cups Red Hots
  • 2 drops Red Food Color

Preparation

Beat the egg white until stiff, then add cream of tartar, corn syrup, vanilla and sugar.

Crush the Red Hots into powder or as fine as you can. I use my Magic Bullet, but you can use a coffee grinder or the old standby of a zippie bag and rolling pin. Add that to the mixture. It should have the consistency of wet sand. You can add food coloring at this point to brighten the red color.

Line a cookie sheet with tin foil (parchment paper works well, too). I use a melon baller, but you can use your hands to make small balls of the mixture. Put them in the oven set to bake at 200ºF for 2 hours. They should be hardened by then. If they are still sticky, turn off the oven and leave them there. They should harden as they cool.

When they are cool, serve them in a bowl as a cinnamon treat!
